I would like to book a shore excursion. Is it cheaper to book through carnival or through place where I wanna do the excursion at?

With the ship excursions you get the convenience of knowing the excursion will be on time and get you back to the ship on time. But you pay more. Most people think the security is worth it, but many do excursions on their own.

We have several articles about this (search: shore excursions indeoendent).

The trick is to do your research and set them up in advance by email. Always double-check a tour company's qualifications online before comitting.

Default I only took one excursion

which was to Aruba. I booked it through Carnival after boarding The Destiny. I had a blast, but drank way too much! We went snorkeling by a sunken ship, then to lunch and had a little time to sunbathe. Then I drank rum and coke non-stop on the way back, via catamaran. I'm sure I drank my money's worth, but I nearly killed myself! I've never been so drunk before or since!

We booked outside the ship on our up coming cruise. They get you back by 4pm which is in plenty of time and the price was like 75.00 cheaper per person than what the ship was charging. I found it here on this website by others using this tour company.

We agree totally with PM here. We have booked both ways. If you have an excursion rich port then time is critical. You may get more done on your own but you are at the mercy of whatever means of travel are available locally, not to mention any traffic/construction/local labor strike etc.

While you do pay more for the ships tours, we feel the security in knowing the ship will wait for us if the tour is late. Also, if the excursion is cancelled you get the money back on your SBA. Getting a refund if you can't do an excursion with a private contractor may be difficult.

We're with Phil and Liz.
We always book with the ship. We both hate to drive so renting a car isn't even a plan.
I guess we aren't very daring. We like the security of having everything taken care of.

If you have any qualms about safety and security in some ports always book with the cruise lines

Booking though the cruise line has a few advantages
1. The tour operator has been pre-screened by the cruise line and is used repeatedly by them so it is important for the to maintain a good relationship with the cruise lines. This means the equipment is well maintained. This is especially important when you are not on U.S. soil. Previously I think it was last year when 12 American cruise-ship passengers were killed in a bus crash in Chile. The group had arranged the excursion themselves and later it was found out that the vehicle did not have proper licensing to carry passengers.
2. If something happens to delay your return, the ship will wait for you. This has happened twice with us.

Usually for us the added price of a cruise tour is worth it. Expecially on all day excursion when time may become a factor. It's certainly is cheaper than paying to catch up with the ship.

We always book tours on our own and do an extensive search of various tour companies to see who other cruisers recommend. In Costa Rica we did a private tour of the Tortoguero Canal. There was just the 2 of us in the boat with our guide. We went by other tour boats where the people were packed in 6 deep and couldn't see anything. That's not the way I like to tour. Plus if you have your own guide you can go at your own pace and see things you might not be able to see if you're with a larger group. Plus, it's alot cheaper than ship excursions
