I have only travelled twice, and the last time I flew into Miami before that was into Orlando......I was also travelling at March Break and didn't find it busy at all.....was through security and at the gate all with in an hour and it was a 1pm flight. We took the transfer through Carnival and on the way to the airport.....one of the freeways was jammed with traffic and the Carnival rep who was on the bus said....."going to be alot missing their flights from FLL", I know that doesn't happen all the time but it would be worth considering depending on your return flight. If you are catching the ship in Miami only makes sense to fly into Miami......saves time riding a bus, plus your transfer rate would be alot cheaper.
I've used both airports and cruise ports, both Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports are fairly easy to navigate around in and use from my opinion.

It was my experience, as well as some other posters, last summer that price wise, Miami was outragous to fly in to. I'm sure it may depend on what part of the country you are coming from (midwest for us). Maybe something has changed since then so make sure to price out both options if you haven't already.

For me hands down, Fll is a user friendly airport, Miami is horrendous in my opinion. Once the 2 Genesis ships port there, things at the airport could get crazy, with the 1000's more people passing through....:(:(

We've decided to come into FLL on a Friday before sailing out of Miami on Saturday.
For us, it was bucks. Flying out of RIC airport to FLL was $60 cheaper than to MIA, plus I was able to book a good hotel there for about $60 less than a comparable one in Miami. Yes, we'll pay about $30 more in transfers, but we figure we're still ahead.
I've done both but I favor FLL and take the shuttle to Miami. The cost of airfare would be the deciding factor now. If I was traveling during a "high" season, I would go to the airport closest to the terminal.
