how far in advance should i set up my onboard expense account. not leaving untill sept.
It's really up to you. I'd put $$ in a savings account or a money market account at the bank and set up my on board account when I checked in on the ship. Why let them you use your $$ when you could?
Granted, you're not going to make a lot of interest, but to me it's still better than letting the cruise line use my $$ ,

i could use a credit card for the onboard expense account, yes? if i use cash and set it up when we get to the boat,is there a minimum you have to apply to your account? what would a decent amount be? it would only be used for tips and maybe a t-shirt or two.
I just pay as I go along so by the time I cruise I have no bills and usually end up with money back if I do not spend it all. I prepay only because I do not like bills at the end of a vacation. Its just peace of mind for me. You can set it up with cash or credit card. I do not know how much per person cash wise they require maybe someone with some cruising experience can answer the question.
The amount that is put on hold on your account depends on how many nights. I couldn't find it on the carnival site, but it seems like on a 5 night it is 150.00, on a 7 night it is 200.00 or 250.00. I can't remember. I had bought some of the funship dollars and applied them to my sign and sail card so we had most of that paid for already. Maybe somebody else will know the exact amount. Enjoy your cruise.
