Default Passport or Proper ID in October????

Hello all -

My Wife and I are setting sail on INSPIRATION on in 2-weeks (May 1st) for our 25th anniversary and "Proper ID" (birth certificate and photo ID/drivers license) is still acceptable.

Here is my question: Will it be for the same cruise in October 2008 or will passports be mandatory? I am planning on surprising my parents with a 50th anniversary cruise and don't want to spoil the surprise too soon by having them go get a passport if one truly is not needed.

THANKS!

Since you don't say where exactly you are going... here's a link where you can make that decision. The change in requiring a passport will be effective 6/1/09 regardless of the destinations.

Hope this helps!

CURRENTLY:
U.S. citizens need to present either (a) a passport, passport card (available in spring 2008), or WHTI-compliant document; or (b) a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.
LATER:
On June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document.

Not to burst your bubble but its probably a good idea for them to have passports. Not only is it much easier for them at check in they may need it if they were to have to fly home (G-d forbid) in an emergency.

I had exceptional time for our passport. From going to the post office on a friday at 4pm, we had it back in 13 days in our mailbox. No kidding. No joking. Absolutely serious!!!!!
