Default Progreso/Cozumel Excursions

Hey all! I just booked my first cruise out of Galveston, tx. I am planning on buying some excursions for the port calls.......any ideas? I have heard that there are some locals that give better pricing and service in the cities themsleves.

Thanks for the help!

PS More feedback on sneaking booze on the ship would also be appreciated.

lakemonkey;

Welcome to CruiseMates, and we do love Austin. We just did the Ecstasy out of Galveston in Jan. We bought the Merida City Tour through the ship for Progresso. It was just OK. They took us to town and we saw some old churches, govmt. bldgs etc. Not much to do in Progresso. Cozumel is another story. There are too many things to do there. We rented a Jeep, and toured the island on our own. It was a blast. You can find tour companies at the port. They are very good, and honest, and you can save quite a bit of cash. Let us know what you enjoy doing, and there are many here with lots of suggestions, and insight.

It is legal take one bottle of wine per 21 year old passenger on the ship. Anything else is prohibited (Don't forget the corkscrew). You can put booze in your checked luggage but they will take it if it is found. For me it's just not worth the hassle.
In Cozumel check out Paradise Beach. Cab is about $13 for up to 4 persons. No admission to the beach. Bar, restrooms, food, and not too expensive booze available. Plenty of taxis to get back to the ship.
Progresso...Not much there for me. Some people have been to the Ruins and enjoyed that. Don't do the Corona Beach Excursion. You can take the free bus to the end of the pier and get the same thing.

Rember if you are doing excursions on your own and are not back onboard the ship at the required time they will leave you.

The cruise lines love that scare tactic. They may or may not leave you.

There is lots to to in Progreso.

Here are pics from one ship tour to Uxmal:

Some from the Cenote snorkeling:

From when I didn't do any real tour other than the $2 busride around town and then walking.

The same company that provides the free shuttle bus from the ship to Progreo also sells tours.

You can email them for current tours and prices and compare to what the ship wants for the same tours. They usually have 1 or 2 more than what is listed on their website.

One thing to remember, when you leave the ship for a non-Carnival excursion or day in port.....bring the day's Capers with you and your cell phone. On the back is contact information for Carnival if something should happen. They may or may not wait on you, but you've got a better chance of it if you let them know what's happened.

Default Cozumel

Yes I agree, we booked most of our excursion on our own, away from the large groups, line and high costs.

Cozumel Cruise Excursions is awesome and I highly recommend them

Thanks for sharing all these pictures with us. I really enjoyed looking at them. We haven't been to Uxmal. It looks very interesting and impressive. We have been to Chichen Itza which is AMAZING, and is a tour offered from Progreso.
