Default Holy cow--Soaring air fare!

Call a paramedic, I think I need CPR after I checked the price of flights to Maimi for my cruise in January!!!! I have been checking to see what the prices are like for over two weeks, each day the fare has been in the 760-790 range, but all of a sudden it spiked to $1000-1200 overnight!!!! I was shocked because I thought the increase would be reasonable, not sell my soul price!!!!

I read today that Air Canada is also adding $120 (round trip) to each flight over 1000 miles (1500 km). I added it up and on a 120 passenger plane that would be over $14000 more for that flight alone, PLUS they want to charge an additional charge for second bag. They also plan to fly at a lesser speed to save fuel.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like the airlines are ripping us off and taking as much from us to make up for lost profits......I love to cruise, but this is crazy!!!

The airlines are just trying to stay in business. Any lost profits they are trying to make up are primarily because of increased fuel cost. The same thing is going to happen with cruise ships or anything else that consumes huge amounts of fuel. I think maybe the oil industry is the one ripping you off.

I read that also about Air Canada, my friend and I booked our cruise for next March Break two weeks ago and are flying Air Canada to San Juan. I am waiting to hear from my travel agent to see if they are going to do like the cruise lines did and charge people that fee even though they have previously booked. $120 bucks that means less money to spend in the casino or shopping

Miami always seems to be super expensive to fly in to. On our cruise last year, we were going to take a 5 day out of Miami but the airfare was so pricy we settled for a 4 day out of Orlando...I've since learned that many fly into Ft Lauderdale for Miami cruises...An option that our travel agent didn't seem to know about for our cruise (and probably why I will use a different agent next cruise even though we had a great time). Long story short, you might try looking for fares into Lauderdale.

Default Airfares UP UP and away!

I will be looking at cruses that start and end in California for awhile. I would much rather be in the Caribbean but Alaska and Mexico are interesting. The best way to bring prices down is stop using the service. Mike

If you think the fares are too high, just don't fly. After all, nobody is placing a gun to your head and making you pay these high fares. Take a cruise on the North Saskatchewan River instead.

Through Carnival, or rent a car. Taxi would cost you a arm and a leg.
By the time you add transfers to and from, you'll probadly be better off fling into Miami. Just my 2-cents.

Happy Sailing to all;

Hmm, cruise the North Saskatchewan River...uhm NOT! The Edmonton Queen is a riverboat and it only done two or three hour dinner cruises. I don't know if you know anything about the North Saskatchewan River, but it is narrow, shallow, and the water is brown.... besides, I live North of the river and the dock is on the south, I don't do the south side of the city unless necessary......

I think as one poster mentioned above there is some type of shuttle service in Lauderdale for this purpose. Even taking a taxi would be hundreds cheaper than the type of airfare we were being quoted to fly into Miami...Although I know that may have changed and depends where you are flying in from. Also, I believe some rent a car in Lauderdale and just drop it off in Miami. I'm guessing there might even be some hotels that offer a shuttle to Miami port if you are staying overnight but others with more experience would be able to tell ya for sure.

When we booked our November cruise, air to Miami was 750.00. We decided to fly into FLL instead. booked air to FLL for 555.00.

Flying into FLL is WAY cheaper than flying into MIA. Transfers using a private company is not as bad as you think.

Johnsmom,
I guess it would depend on where your fling from. Before I booked our airflight for August, I did check on FLL and MIA. For us, its the same price.
Happy Cruising to all;
David

Not sure but I thought there was some type of train between FLL and Miami.

I, too, freaked on the price to Miami for our October cruise. I just booked last week for the 5 of us and saved about 1200.00 by flying into Ft. Lauderdale. I hired a car service to meet us at the FLL airport, drop in Miami at the Holiday Inn and return for us at the Miami port (then back to FLL). For 5, its 97.50 each way. More economical than flying into Miami for us. Plus, there are no non-stop flights from our airport to Miami. Ugh. I agree though - the prices are going crazy.

Did you try United? For giggles, I went to Yahoo Travel, put in the dates of Jan 17-24th.

There are two flights with 1 layover for $866. One has a layover in Chicago, IL and the other is in Denver, CO. Both are roughly the same amount of time for flight travel.

The cheapest I found was $794 on Alaska Air, but you have 2 layovers. That's nuts.

Check out http://www.airfarewatchdog.com/

You can get notices on the airfare deals to and from all different kinds of places.

I too am concerned about the airfare going to Florida from Alaska. We are booked to sail out of FLL and the airfare is lingering around the $750 range. I'm watching fares to Miami too but we may need to change to the west coast and sail out of San Diego. Fares seems to be lower for us to take that option.

I found a $231.00 PP from Houston to Miami in November.
