Default Please Help with shore excursions

this is my gf's and my first ever cruise:

i am going on the valor on june 8th with my gf, we are staying on the verandah deck, level 8 i believe.. How is it?

the most important question i have though is regarding shore excursions...
should we book a shore excursion through carnival and pay about $35 extra or just book it through a reputable online excursions company?

the ONLY positive i see booking them through Carnival is that the ship won't leave without you if something happens? should i chance it and go through an online company?

please help

We just returned from the Western Caribbean on the Valor. We were on the Verandah AFT Cabins with the extended balconies. I would never cruise any other way again We are very spoiled now You will love the Verandah deck.
As for the excersions: We did some ourselves. Some of our group booked with Carnival because they were long excursions and were afraid. All the people who run the excursions are well aware of the ship's schedules and need the "word of mouth" We had a great tour in Honduras, his name was Ralph. Look for him. It was a great tour and very little money.

Part of me wants to tell you to book independent, but with this being your first cruise, and not knowing what to expect, I tend to advise booking through Carnival.

Booking through Carnival does tend to cost more, but you also have the peace of mind, that you will be taken care of by the company you are cruising with.

I never advise waiting until you get off the ship. Some of the people on the dock saleing excursions are I am sure fine people but you just don't know that you are getting with people from....

Either book with Carnival, on line from the comfort of your home, or do some investigating of independent excursions, also while at home. That way you can check the companies out. A suggestion is to go to the destination site here at Cruisemates and see what others have done before you.

Good luck and have a great cruise.

Luanne

We would agree with Luanne.....book thru Carnival.

You just never know what may happen on an excursion and being in a foreign place to boot.

Once you have done a few ports and get a sense of how the time and travel issues work in various ports then you could book independantly.

Remember....eat in the dining room at least once. Get room service at least once (tip the delivery person a few $-it is customary). Go and watch the kareoke...its hilarious! Don't go overboard with the photo area...you don't have to buy any of them! Bottled water costs you on the ship but the water/coffee/juices are free at the buffet lines. Know what the ships time is...it is different that your time.

Enjoy the cruise !!

You are new to cruising, so go with ship excursions for now. You don't want to be the passenger that EVERYONE is cheering for while you RUN to catch the ship, which should have set sail a few minutes before you started to RUN for the ship. You don't want to have to find a way to the next port if the ship leaves without you....

One tip--pay close attention to what they say the ship time is and when you are to be back on board the ship!!!

Verandah Deck-Good choice, high up enough, to enjoy the sea from the balcony and one deck away from the FOOD and the action on Lido deck!

I am going on the Valor June 8th too! We have booked all of our tours (except for one) online through other companies. I found reputable companies by reading these boards. Here is what we booked online:
Cayman- Stingray city with Captain marvin
Cozumel-Dolphin swim with Dolphin discovery
Belize-capve tubing with Major Tom
Honduras- We booked Tabanya beach with Carnival
We are on the Lido deck, balcony! Close to the food! haha! We got a FREE upgrade from OV main deck, I can't believe it, I can't wait!

Florida322-
How did you get ahold of Dolphin Discovery? Were they cheaper than Carnival? I will have 3 teenage girls who would LOVE to be with the Dolphins. Thanks, Nancy

We have always booked the excursions through Carnival, it gave me peace knowing the Ship would wait. REmember 3 teenage girls!!!!!

Have a GREAT time. WE have not been on Valor yet, but Conquest 3 times.

July can't get here soon enough.

Nancy

Nancy, I just booked online at www.dolphindiscovery.com. The prices are all listed there. We booked the royal swim. I have 2 teenage boys, and they are so excited about it! If you book 4 dolphin swims you also get free transportation to the park. The price was about $150.00 per person. This includes admission to the park which is normally around $16. I think that if you book through Carnival they take you to a new place called Dolphinaris. I wanted to go to the chankanaab park to do the dolphin swim. Oh, you did have to prepay for the entire thing online. But they sent a confirmation email, so I am all set to go!

Default verandah cabins

did you request the verandah cabin or was it assigned at the last minute. I just got back from Liberty and friends of ours had a verandah cabin. We're cruising with our granddaughter in October and it would be great if we could get this cabin. Our friends booked late and got this cabin.
