Default Life Boat Drill stories & advise from past cruisers...

Does anyone have and good advice or stories about Life Boat Drills.... I'll start us off.

My friend Elaine ... calls the drill a Mustard Grill... I keep telling her it's not Mustard it's Muster and it's not Grill it's Drill... she'll get it sometime.... lol

Tip for people who are physically challenged or are a larger sized person. Go to the cabin and get your life jacket from the closet and try it on to make sure it fits. If not have your steward get you one that does. Then if you have any special needs let the staff know so they can accomodate you. Also, take you vest and go to your Muster Station about an hour before the drill. They close the elevators during the drill. If you are lucky to have a drill in a lounge you can get a good seat and be comfy for the drill. Also, don't put on your vest until told to by staff.

I'll add that if you are at all claustrophobic or prone to panic attacks, let the crew member in charge of your area know and they'll be sure you can stay in front of the group if your muster station is on deck.

We always start up the stairs, carrying our life jackets, about 15-30 minutes before the announced muster drill time. We like to know exactly what we'd do in case of a real emergency when the elevators don't work !

We went when they first called our station, almost one of the first ones there. Needless to say we were stuck at the very back of about 4 deep people, the people that strolled in at the last minute or even late of course were put at the front. Next time I think we will take our time and amble on in at the last minute and get in front. To many smelly people in the back

we met these guys from Virgina...this is them at the Muster Drill:

they said "Safety, it's now as sexy as it is important."

all but one remember this pic...as they had all had a bit too much to drink already at this point....

they said that people were mad at them for being at the "wrong" muster station but the crew had nothing to say to them.

i know they are necessary but i hate them...this past time wasn't so bad as the ship sailed at 10 p.m. after sundown instead of 4 p.m. in the heat of the day!

Good point. I found it is best to find out where your station is. If it is in a lounge or an area where there is lots of seating. Get their early with a nice drink. Get a seat and relax... However, if it is on deck like it was for me on the Glory.. oh my I was standing in that heat for too long with the jacket on in the back. Someone finally realized I was about to pass out and brought me forward to a chair. So if you station is on a deck... wait as long as you can to join the crowd. :-)

it was quite amusing...

i saw this only after we all got back home...and promptly cracked up...especially when i asked "were you already drunk at this point?" and the one guy answered "i don't even remember this picture..." because that totally answered my question!

How do you know where your muster station is? Can you bring refreshments?

Your muster station informatation will be on the back of your door. As you start going to the designated area, there will be crew to show you where to go.

Refreshments would be frowned upon;):) I decided next time I will bring a small bottle of water, as it can get very close and stuffy.

Muster drill can be fun, but it can also be a sweaty time too!

Tips:

When the sound goes off that you are to head to the assigned locations--WAIT 10 minutes before you go. I got one of my suitcases a few minutes before it was sounded, so I unpacked the whole suitcase and then went down. I wasn't the last, but close!

Wrap a hand towel around your neck and then put the lifejacket on to keep from getting too hot and sweaty...

If you don't want to do the hand towel trick, then bring a wet facecloth and wipe your face as you need it, if you get hot and sweaty!!

Bring a camera to take pictures!!!!

Use the stairs, the elevators will fill up too fast!!!!!

Have fun...I have 98 days left...

It's also on your sail & sign card.

To make the drill get over as quickly as possible, please try and refrain from talking and joking around so the staff can give the instructions they need to pass along and just maybe someone can actually hear them that might just help save a life in an actual emergency. I don't know anyone who actually likes the "mustard grill" but since we need to do it we need to cooperate so we don't get heat stroke waiting for everyone to settle down and listen!!

Go late so you stand in the front, put your jacket on the last possible minute, hope to god you dont have the sun blasting on you, and to pass the time just think about the good times you are about to have...the drill is the last formality you have to deal with..

The one amusing thing I found (on Royal anyway), was when men put the life vests on & 'chest' bumped each other.

As my boyfriend said, he now has a better understanding of what large chested women go through!
