Default please help, couple beginner cruise questions

hi, my wife and I would like to try our first cruise this september. we have it narrowed down to a caribbean cruise on carnival valor.

we are wondering if the average cost is much higher than the air, cabin cost, tipping etc? we like to have a few alcoholic cocktails,a few slots maybe. at ports just wandering and enjoying the beaches work fine for us. we considered a return to disneyworld at a total cost of around
$4000 and hope to stay within this range on a 7 day cruise instead.

Hi, my first cruise last year was a 4-nighter on Sensation (to the Bahamas) but I'm now booked on the Valor for June 2009 - Eastern Caribbean. You can easily stay under $4000 if you get an inside room or an outside one without a balcony. Just head for a deck when you want to gaze at the ocean. I'll have a tiny Cat 1A oni Valor, but it is one of the few 1a's that is an outside room wiht 2 porthole windows, so I'm thrilled about that.

Just buy a few of the "best" ship photos, don't drink or gamble a lot, take the cheaper excursions, and you'll spend a lot less than at Disneyworld. Go for it. You can always do DisneyWorld some other time! After a cruise, you won't want to do any other type of vacation.

We can easily stay under $2000. $4000 seems huge to me. We book ahead though, so that saves a lot and use a TA who discounts a little.

That seems like a lot to spend. I could hit the jewelry stores big time in the ports for that much lol.

Are you booking a cheaper cabin or a balcony? Things like that make a difference in the price. You can bring a bottle of wine each to drink in your cabin or some smuggle in some booze so your booze bill wouldnt be so high. Without knowing how much you will spend on souveneirs or which cabin you want to book hard to say how much you could spend, but we could do it for half that.

I like to know costs ahead so I normally create an excel spreadsheet and run the costs through it. Remember $10 PP per day will be added for tips so add the $140 to the price. Also to save money on booze you can call Carnival's Bon Voyage Department 1-800-522-7648 per cruise and order bottles of booze. It's more pricey then on land but cheaper the individual drinks. Rum with some of the fruit punch is pretty good.

part of why we say $4000 is including air from winnipeg which is near $1200.00.

Is it actually possible to sneak a bottle onto the ship?

how much for,say a bottle of rum from the bonvoyage department?

oh and also we have decided we want a balcony room.

Balcony room.. Wow.. I am newbie at this too. I will be interested to see if you can do it. Please keep us updated.

I recently went to 7 night carribean with Carnival Victory. We spent $3000 total for the whole trip. We did an excursion in each port. Only 1 excursion through Carnival. We don't drink and we drove to Miami and stay with our friend. We also shopped in a few places for souvenir. We booked the cheapest room (Inside Guarantee) and got upgraded to a higher deck.

I think you might be able to pull it off since you will be traveling in September which ususaly has lower rate than Summer.

We definitely will be looking at the next cruise soon.

Good luck.

Last time I priced it was about $40 for a liter bottle. If you don't get seasick book a 8A GTY room for the plain balcony. My goal next cruise is a Cat 9A (same room inside bigger balcony). If you chose to sneak booze on the ship that is your decision, however, I won't give you any advice on that. Sorry.

We are doing the 7 night Mexican Riviera.... We have already pd for tips, and our hotels/resorts, for the night before and the night after. I have $400 OBC so far... and we have set aside a few hundred more..
We are bringing one bottle of booze and one case of soda..
Oh yes, I already bought $100 in drink coupons and 2 photo coupons...
Basically most of our trip is pd for... but what's going to kill us, is the cost of gas driving to and from Long Beach...

Hey Ferrangi I know where you are! I lived in Discovery Bay CA for 2 years. I loved it there. We went to Antioch all the time for dinner and shopping. There is nothing in Disco Bay.

I moved away about 2 years ago. They have a safeway and one restuarant. But it was great living on the water. 8) Now the only water in my backyard is when it floods.

2000$ each ?
I can have a heck of a vacation for $ 2000 , then again I don't drink or gamble. I do however spend quit a bit on shore trips and do get suckered into those photos .

They now have a whole shopping center with several restuarants, mcdonalds, and an Ice cream place, for some reason I can't recall the name, oh yes... cold stone creamery....
Anyway, once in a while we head up to Angels Camp by way of Hwy 4 and I can't believe the changes in DB.
Hope we are able to meet up with you all on a cruise one day! 8)
