Default carnival cruise miles credit card

Right now I use american express for EVERYTHING. I do pay a yearly fee of about 130.00 and we have 3 cards. I get one point /dollar. Just got a carnival sea miles app in the mail. Can anyone compare the two cards for me - or give me any info? Is it just as good as an american express? Thanks!

Here's what I know. Sea Miles offers either a Mastercard or Visa. No annual fee for either of them. Your earn 1 "mile" per doller spent and 2 for every dollar spent with Carnival. The reward levels they advertise are minimum requirements (i.e. free 7-day cruises may start at 50K or whatever, but the more desirable cruises are more likely over 100K miles per person). Their website has a pretty good search feature for finding cruise information. Discounts on cruises seem to be from brochure rates. You can get a rebate on airfare $25 / 5000 miles, and they have resort discounts but you have to call the toll-free number and kind of fish for resorts.

My wife & I had separate accounts until we found out we couldn't combine them for rewards, each would have to book at single rate. So we drained one account on airline rebate and added a second cardholder on one card.

Summary: be prepared to rack up a pretty large pile of miles before going on a nice 7-day cruise for two. We're still pursuing that.

We just got enough miles with the Carnival card to do a 5 day ocean view cruise. Sorry but no amount of points will get you a 7 day with the Carnival card. 7 day cruises are not even a option. For us its not worth it. As soon as we take the free cruise we are going to cancel the card.

if there is no fee, pay it off but keep it, its bad for your credit rating to close an account and with a zero balance, it makes your utilization (the amount of credit vs debt) higher, which makes your rating go up. Closing a card with a clear balance makes your debt to credit ration go down, making your rating go down.

None of my business, just thought i'd let you know. I once cleaned my credit from low 500's to almost 800 in 6 months

We have the card and used it to book our cruise once we had 50,000 points. We are on the bottom of the ship with no chance of an upgrade, even being a past guest. The cruise is priced higher than the past guest price. We only recieved $400 discount on a full price cruise with alot of hassle and phone calls, which were not returned once the cruise was booked. So to complete our tale, we actually recieved the cruise at the regular pass guest price. After 3 years of adding points that basicly meant nothing, Never will I use my seamiles card again. You are better off getting a cash back card. My mission is to prevent anyone else from going through the hassle, rudeness and lack of respect we endured.
HAVE A NICE DAY!

Thanks for the opinions. We also were sucker into the hype with the Seamiles MC. After accumulating 15000 points, I have decided to use my AMEX or Dixcover card either of which will pay me CASH!!!!!!

I made a mistake made on my earlier post. You can get a 7 day cruise but that will cost you a minium of 60,000 points per person for an Interior room and 75,000 points per person for an Ocean View room. Please not that I said minimum points. It could end up costing more depending on the ship, date of sailing and the intinerary. There is no option for a balcony room at all.
Here is the note that Carnival added:
Cruises on Carnival Conquest, Glory, Legend from New York, Liberty, Miracle, Sprit, Valor and the Victory from Charleston & Norfolk are available at higher point levels.

I am of the school of thought that you cannot get something of value for free.

I have a Continental Airlines debit card that I used for everything. After three years I had enough for 1/2 a flight. I hit the ceiling and cancelled it after that.

For the Sea Miles credit card it is not worth it to buy the cruise with the points you get with the credit card. It is a lot better to be these gift cards they have and you can buy them with the points you get from using the credit card. Do not call Carnival and ask about the gift cards, call the Sea Miles Credit card company.

Let me rephrase it. It is worth it to get free cruises, but you can get more free cruises if you get the gift cards with your points.

OK - I'll stick with AMEX - where after almost 6 years I finally used my points. Flights and hotels to and from Dallas and flights (round trip) for my alaska cruise. Worth it to me. Just wanted to compare. Guess each has its ups and downs

Ups and downs it seems like our Carnival card just has a lot of downs.

On top of Nurseypoo's posting, let me add more to that.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS!!!! Get a copy of your credit record once a year. Why? News flash for that don't know this.

Anyone you have given out financial information to can now get a copy. The more places that "hit" your credit record to check your ratings or whatever, the lower your credit record goes.

Banks, Employers, Magazines, Cable Companies, Insurance companies, Electrical companies, etc are just a few.

To avoid a 'hit' (and some do it monthly!), you can have anyone blocked from gaining access.

On top of that NO EMPLOYER has the right to check your credit rating no matter what job you are trying for. Always say No on any employment application for them to check your credit record even if it stated you might not be hired. I've always done this and never had a problem.
Unless my employer is offering me a bank loan for a house or a car, its none of their business.

Hmmmmm....

I was advised that for every block of say 5000-10,000 points you earn that you get a discount off of any cruise that you book?????

I'm still waiting for my card to arrive but as I recall I saw something that stated if you accumulated something around 10,000 points that you also earned a $150 discount off of you next cruise....

True - False - Something in the middle??????

I would say that the Carnival Credit Card is a total waste of time. I accumulated 60,000 points and all I could get was a small discount on an 8 day cruise. The card went right into the shredder. I would rather get frequent flier miles on another card.

How small, least than 200 dollars . That was on a booking for 4 people
on an 8 day trip out of ny. The price was very high already because for the great distance the ship has to travel to get to the Caribean I might have gotten a better price if I tried other web sites or even Carnival.
What a waste and a rip-off.

I must add my two cents as I also spent several thousand points, and did not receive anything better then what I would have gotten anyway, and the worse part is I paid for the inssurance, and after we had booked for three we decided to take a fourth person and get two rooms instead , so they said my insurance was no longer valid , even though I had paid for the three of us to have it. They said by canceling the room and rebooking it for two made it a new booking.I'd be damed to pay for it again, so that was the only time I did not have it, and thank god I did not need it.
How unfair was that.

Like I said I hate that card and can't wait until the balance is paid in full so I can cut mine up into a million little pieces!

Well I got the card and figured that with 6 months at a zero percent APR I went ahead and booked the cruise and shall see what happens point wise.

I will pay it all off within the 6-month (0% APR) stage and hope that I build up some discount benefit points. If not I can always just cancel.

Either way - I'm cruising on the Legend in 339 days from today!!!!!!
