Default Purchase Drink Coupons or Not?

I've seen several posts about people purchasing drink coupons. Whats the purpose of them? Are you trying to keep your Sail and Sign card down, or are you saving money? or both? Any other reason?

Default drink coupons

Im buying them to save money and not to have so much on my sign n sail card. If you buy the coupons for 21.25 it works out to paying only 5.30 for a drink and that includes the 15% tip.

You can buy them before your cruise ......

And, I would guess that you can by them once onboard.

Its the same amount as other drinks - just seems like your saving abecause you buy them ahead and don't get a big sail and sign bill. All a matter of preference

I buy drink coupons for each cruise. I buy one set a paycheck. This way I know what I have to spend. Sometimes they charge 80 cents extra to my sign and sail card if I purchase a drink at the pool bar so I have learned to get them from someone walking around taking orders. The coupons are good from cruise to cruise. We just came back from the Glory and I have four drink coupon sets left that we did not use. I plan on taking them in 09 on that cruise to use. I use the coupons as a budget system so by the time I cruise everything is paid up in full and I have we no bill for the vacation to place on my credit card. I also purchase photo coupons for this same reason and gift certificates which I use for my on board credit. It doesn't save you any money all it does is save you a bill at the end of the cruise because you have prepaid everything ahead of time.

Good for you enjoy those four sets of drinks. You'll see at the end of the cruise your balance won't be alot with all that ahead of time purchasing you are doing. Enjoy & have fun!

Are these for all drinks or just non-alcoholic? And if it is alcoholic does it include mixed drinks?

You are purchasing a bar credit, each is good for one (alcoholic) drink not exceeding 5.25. If its for the bar, I'd say non alcoholic drinks would work--but if they are cheaper than 5.25 it might be better just to purchase them. From what other posters have said about them, if you choose a drink over 5.25 they just charge the difference to your sail and sign.

IMO its silly to buy anything ahead of time if you dont have to. Would you buy a car or some other luxury item before you use it? No. If there is no cost savings then why give your money to Carnival before they have given you the item? They absolutely will not run of of drinks on the ship. That makes no sense to me. For a shore excursion I possibly may see the advantage although you can buy it the day you board and you should get your choice. People have the idea that the whole trip appears cheaper if you dont load up your ss card at the end. Its a mindset that costs you money on the front end that you are giving to the cruise line and not your own pocket. Granted its not a lot of money but I would rather wait and not feel like I have to use my coupons. And dont get me started about having leftovers..

I know it doesn't save me any money, but I feel better know that I already have $100 worth of drinks, $30 for photos, my excursion paid for, and yes, I already have $400 OBC.
Its just that much less I have to budget in now.. especially with gas prices the way they are... I'm driving and will also have to pay for parking too.
those are things I can't pay for ahead of time.
By the way... did you hear there is a place here in Concord selling gas for $3.99 gal??

ferrangi,
I want to know where in Concord there is gas for $3.99?? If I'm passing by I may have to stop but I'm not going hunting. Made me mad yesterday when I drove out to Oakley and saw the gas cheaper then here in Walnut Creek. Oh well, at least my cruise is paid for and I'm building ship board credit as we speak, since I registared with my travel agent for my bridal showers and wedding.

buying fun ship dollars is also a good ideal way to keep your sign and sail card bill low at the end of the cruise.
you can turn them in when you get on the ship.
Its nice having most of your fun paid for before you get on the ship..

have a good time
