Default Cell Phone Air Card Reception in Easter Caribbean

I'm curious what kind of reception any of you may of had with your cell phone and, in particular, your air card while in the Eastern Caribbean? I use AT&T for cell phone and Verizon for air card.

Unfortunately, work has to stay in touch with me and it's the only way I can go on this cruise is if I stay connected.

I used my AT&T cell phone on the Carnival Liberty on the eastern Caribbean and it worked very well.

You will get cell-phone receoption in the cruise ships, but not necessarily on the islands. All the cruise ships now have translators for almost every cellphone - but the Caribbean is one place where most average cellphones don't work. (except the USVI islands).

Cellphone usage on a cruise ship is expensive - usually $3 - $4 /minute

Only used my AT&T at St Thomas and San Juan P.R . Reception was excellent and there was no extra cost.

Unless Verizon has shutdown service in the last eighteen months I had no problem with reception on Grand Cayman, Cozumel and Jamaica.

Verizon's website also lists their availability areas for International Service: Note: Verizon has very limited service in Europe unless you have a SIM card or GSM dual mode phone.

I have used my Verizon wireless on the ship in the Caribbean and the Baltics and reception was just fine but it is expensive!! Limit your calling time.

Take care,
Mike

I have gotten excellent reception with my AT&T phone on most of the islands in the Caribbean. However, except for Puerto Rico and USVI, you have to have international roaming enabled and you will pay extra.

I guess most of the new phones are qorld-wide (quad-band). In the old days, even having a tri-band ohone was not enough to get coverage in non-USVI (Puerto Rico and St Thomas) islands.

But the newest phones do have coverage, it seems. I will wager it is still $2.50/minute on up. And if you are receiving data (email) it can get VERY expensive.

For my iPhone, AT&T warned me to turn off data-roaming while overseas, or it could cost me hundreds of dollars on my next bill.
