Default Sorry, another passport question

Hello everyone.
I'm sorry, I know this subject is old, but it's getting closer to my cruise date and I want to start checking off my list.....

We are going to the Mexican Riviera... when we get off the ships at the ports... do we need to take our passports with us or not.

I know that we only needed our S&S card to get back on the ship... but what if something happens.... Would a copy of the passport and birth cirtificate work?

What do you do?

We have never taken our passports off the ship in any port. They stay locked up in the safe. This time we are taking copies with us because we will be in Europe. A copy of your passport would be fine along with your S&S card and a government ID, ie driver's license. No need for your birth certificate the passports covers that. Enjoy!

I think its a matter of preference, Ive heard lots of arguements go both ways. I plan on taking mine with me because Ive heard that its easier to get a replacement passport from the embassy rather than deal with foreign police. If you purchased travel insurance, Im pretty sure they will help you replace lost or stolen passports--double check on that.

I just take my S&S card and photo ID.

Folks, there is zero reason to bring a passport ashore on this cruise.

If you get mugged and and they take your passport, do you really think that you will have enough time to go to the US Embassy and get a new one before the ship sails?

Also, try using your copy with the immigration folks upon you re-entry into the USA.

I always carry a color copy of my passport in a separate area of my wallet just in case something ever did happen to my passport but I have never taken the original off the ship in ports. There is no reason to that I know of. I just take my S&S and photo id and thats it.
It is much safer to leave the original in the safe.

A copy is probably fine getting back on board the ship. Never had to even use that. But, if you should happen to get stranded in a port, ONLY the original will get you back into the US via plane. Yes, the embassy can help, but then you have to find lodgings, etc until they get it done. Personally, I would not relish staying overnight in some of the ports that I love to visit.

My passport is with me 24/7 at all times. I've neve worried about it. I have my new passport and the old one will be locked on the ship as a backup, as it is was voided, but the dates are still valid.

A photocopy of a passport is as good as a blank piece of paper, it has no validity at all as ID, not even for an embassy if you need an emergency replacement....A photocopy at home is a good idea, but not a shore....

I normally take a copy of my passport (the information page only) along with the seapass. I leave the original passport in the room or ship's safe. I've never been asked to see the passport.

The US Embassy or Consulate only issues temporary passports and will assist you with getting on the airplane and notifying HLS of your arrival.

And remember that they are not open on Saturday or Sunday.

- Report it to the local police and get a police report.
- You will need two forms of ID to prove who you are.
- You need USD/credit card to pay the fees.
- If you have none of that, you will need a contact in the US to "vouch" for you and pay the fees.

You really don't want to run around with it. Keep it locked awary and/or in a very secure place. The other thing people want to take everywhere with them is their social security cards and alot of times their kids social security cards. That is just asking for trouble because all someone has to have is your SSN number and DOB and they have essentially stolen your ID. I'd rather have 2,000 dollars taken from me than lose my SSN card and driver licesne with my DOB on it, seriously!

If your passport by some hugely wild chance would be lost or stolen, it can be dealt but of course it will be a hassle. Again, don't be running around with it.
