Default Long Beach embarkation lines!!!

Okay, so is it true that if you wait an hour or 2 after they start boarding... the line is much shorter and we will be able to board more quickly?
My sis and I can't really stand in long lines... I've been to long beach last year and it was hot and no place to sit...
Lucky for us we were in a cat 11 and got in the VIP line...

I have a friend who does that he comes in about an hour before the ship sails and he says he gets right on. I'm the opposite I like getting to port at 11AM. However, if there is a delay in clearing this ship I'm left standing and waiting. But I'm cheaper and want lunch on the ship.

On my last trip I got to the pier around 130ish and waited maybe 15 minutes from start to finish. That included chit chatting with some employees. I liked it better becauses we didnt have to deal with long lines.. ( we would see those all week anyway) and the boarding process was 100% stress free. It made for happy campers. Also our room was ready so we didnt have to lug around our carry on to the lido deck to eat. I am sold on late boarding..

Yeah.. it's settled then... we shall be patient and wait a bit.
but it's very sad... all I can think of is going to get something to eat while we wait...
I'm not about to when in just a couple of hours we are going to have all the free food we could possibly want.

We got to the pier at noonish and got right on. There wasn't a single line Our carry-on was light, we parked it and one "keeper" at a table overlooking the bay while the rest went to get food. We love nothing more than having a nice lunch with sea-side view....which is exactly what we got by going early. We packed dice for this game the kids love and after lunch we played and enjoyed the sea air until it was 1:30 and our room was ready. For embarkation we did the reverse - practically waited until everyone was off the ship before we left. Again, enjoyed breakfast, the waterfront and picking up our luggage (it was the only stuff left! Our flight wasn't until the next day (stay at the Hyatt Regency in Long Beach if you can - you won't be disappointed) so we weren't rushed and could stay late.

Oh boy that sounds good.... we are driving back up to the bay area (S.F.) but not before staying the night about 1/2 way back at the Tachi Palace Hotel/Casino...

I'm the type of person that will stretch my vacation out as long as possible...

Did I mention we are staying at our timeshare about 1/2 way down to long beach.... 2 nights before we ever get on the ship...

I love my vacation time.....

I'm with you sister! We like to stretch out our vacation time as well. By booking the cheapest flight we couldn't leave Long Beach until 4 the day after the flight. It was actually cheaper to leave from the Long Beach Airport on the return flight instead of flying out of LAX. We had a great time at Rainbow Harbor across from the hotel and even took the kids to the Aquarium of the Pacific the next day. All within walking distance of the hotel too. Here I am, home one day from the cruise and back online here because I"m missing vacation already

Side note - if anyone ever gets the chance to fly out of Long Beach you should. We had no idea the airport was so small. We had the best laugh and the best time of it

ferrangi,

If you are going to be that close I would just wait and get to the ship around 1:30 or 2:00 p.m. You won't have the long initial line, you can still get something to eat and you won't have to lug the carry on around the ship.

Take care,
Mike

Mike,
Yes, we have decided to board around 1:30 or 2pm... but you better believe we are going to be close by...
We plan on leaving early from Sovang.... I don't care how early we get to Long Beach, just as long as we get there....

I remember boarding at Miami last year (one of the last times they used the old terminal buildings). We got to the port at 12:30 and I was at my cabin at 1pm, 30 minutes later. It took 10 minutes to get through the security scanner and once cleared I didn't have to wait in line for an agent. It took longer to weave my way through the line than it did to check in and encounted no lines at all until I got on the ship to get S&S photo taken....By the time I got on board I would safely say that 75% of the passengers were on the ship.

Now the check in times have closed at 2:30 I do hope we are picked up by 11am instead of 12 like last year. There was only 30 or so of us at the hotel, but it would have been nice to get to the port earlier. I do want to get there early so I can line up for a cabana.....If not, I'll book the alternate excursion so I can be off the ship on the first or second tender!!!

The lines were not long at all.. We boarded the ship at 12:50 and 1:15 we were eating lunch on the Lido deck.
If you want long lines go to Southwest LAX. On our flight home we were in lines to check in for almost 2 hours before we got to the gate!!

Want another long line? How about Orlando airport on a weekend? Seems every cruiser and Disney lover in America is there then. I have seen check in lines that seem like they could fill a stadium. Check your bags at the curb even if it costs a few bucks. Long security lines there is nothing we can avoid. Damn terrorists..

ferrangi, yes I remember it was hot. And hot when we got into our cabin. Remember the Bday cake I got for u 2 was almost melting. I was having a back issue and there were not enough places to sit until we got inside. When I take my cruise in April I'm taking the coast starlight round trip from Martinez CA is $88. The shuttle to the pier. May come the day prior and stay at the Queen Mary. Can't wait. I know you will love the longer cruise on the bigger ship.

Carol,
I've learned from my friends here on CM, that if I wait about 1 hr after they start boarding, there's almost no line at all...
So Pam and I are going to make sure we get there in plenty of time, however we are not attempting any lines until well after they start boarding..

We were told at our hotel to do early check in at the Queen Mary... so we did. They took our luggage, got our sail and sign cards... then had all afternoon to visit the QM or go back across the water to do some shopping. They gave us a slip of paper that had our group number in and time. We just walked right up to the specified line... right past the million mile ling line. Easy as pie. Except for the wait to get "scanned".
