Default What should I know about Port of Miami

Hello All,

We decided to take a cruise out of Miami this time on Carnival Liberty, leaving September 6, 2008. Normally, we always drive down to Port Canaveral or Tampa but I don't want to keep sailing on the same ship all the time. We never been to Miami and would like to know what to expect as far as traffic, parking and what ever else you can think of. According to mapquest, it's a ten hour drive, so we should arrive around noon. Any tips or pointers you can give us would be greatly appreciated.

First, I understand that Yahoo's directions are better than Mapquest but alternatively, it might be time to buy a Tom Tom or something similar. Otherwise, just wondering why you aren't driving in the day before so that you're rested? Otherwise, I hope you enjoy Liberty. It's a big ship but my favorite part was the big screen under the stars. This was one cruise that I wished we had blown off dinner a few nights....

I will be using my GPS, never leave home without it! I just reference Mapquest for an estimated time of travel and a rough idea of where I'm going. The only reason we're coming in at the last minute is because I have to work on Friday until 6:00 -7:00 at night. I just couldn't pass up going on this cruise. The good thing about it is that I have all day Saturday and Sunday to get back home. Anyway, I have a whole week of rest and relaxation, fresh air, soaking up the sun, good eats, drinks and entertainment. Can't beat that!

You won't have any problem with Miami, if your directions are correct into the port. (Just follow all the traffic, and watch for the ship) Parking is pretty much like the others, except on a larger scale. Most of the ships have covered parking now, but the last time I sailed, our ship was assigned the outside parking. I've sailed out of Miami many, many times, and "knock wood" have never had a problem with parking or the auto upon our return. Parking there now, "last time" was $15 per day.

Good luck,

Ken

Parking must be paid up front and in cash. This caught some friends of ours off guard and he had to drive back to the terminal to get cash from his wife and then go to the parking garage again. He said there was a shuttle running from the garage to the terminals.

I haven't been to port Canaveral but Miami Sea Port is much bigger than Tampa’s Sea Port. There are 3 cruise ship terminals. The parking garage is a long way from 2 of the terminals so drop off your luggage and then park the car. Watch the signs they will tell you which ship is docked at which terminal, although that should be fairly easy to see. The signage is mainly to direct you to which road loops around to the front of each terminal.

You drive through downtown Miami to get to the port but Saturday traffic isn't usually be too bad. Mostly port traffic anyway. We take a taxi from Sunny Isles on the beach (about 1/2 way between Ft Lauderdale and Miami) and the trip is about 30 - 45 minutes.

By about 12:30 or 1:00 the traffic and lines in the terminals should be dieing down. I think the airport busses get there about 11:30.

During sail away for the best view you want to be on the north side of the ship. There is a road out to South Beach on that side and you get a lot of honking and waving from the cars. The other side is mostly industrial style harbor facilities.

Hello All,

Thanks for the great information, especially the bit about needing cash for parking. I would of tried and given them my charge card and not have that much cash on hand. It's a good thing we can rely on this forum to find out everything we need to know. Hey, anybody been to Grand Turk? What's there?
