Default Packing - Help!!!

A friend that returned from a 4 day cruise suggested that I start packing for my 7 day cruise now (I leave in 24 days on Carnival Triumph). Now I understand why. I have too much. I have looked at packing lists and suggestions and have just managed to confuse myself.

I know that the formal thing has kind of gone by the board, but i rarely get to wear the white dinner jacket and regalia, so I thought I would bring that out. Several pairs of shorts... way too many shirts I guess (tees, tanks and collared), some jeans and then some casual pants (Dockers), shoes and flip-flops, bathing suits, socks and underwear.... This has gotten insane.

Any suggestions on what to cut out? I don't want to take too much, but I don't wanna be embarassed by not having the right clothes either or look like the Clampets visit the Caribbean. Oh, and you may have guessed, this is my first cruise. .

You really don't need the jeans in the Caribbean. 2 pair of Dockers, 2 shorts, and some matching shirts will do it. It is not unusual to spend 75% of your time wearing just a baithing suit and Tshirt. Don't take too many Tshirts. You will probably buy a couple and there is a coin laundry or valet service if needed. The standard rule is lay out what you think you will use and then put half of it away. You will be surprised how few clothes you really need. 8)

I agree. Bring half of what you think you need and you will have plenty. If you get in a jam, there are coin laundries on the Carnival ships. I always pack the night before I leave, too, so I don't forget anything. Always pack your favorite clothes too. The ones you are ho hum about will remain in the suitcase.

Thanks for the replies. It just sounds too easy. Because of my work I am one of "those" people that have to plan for any and every contention, and while it serves me well at work, it doesn't help for packing.

I'll do just what you suggested and take your advise. Thanks again.

Jay,
I am the same way...every possible contingency must be planned for. I used to design mainframe software and thinking of everything that could go wrong and what to do about it was part of my job.

BUT, cruises are different. After 35+ cruises, I have learned to minimize what I take, especially re. clothing. I am now older and not healthy, so med's, etc. take up a lot of room. Have to cut back on wardrobe.

Tip #1....forget about what other people "might" think about your attire. They are way too busy having fun to care or even notice, unless you try to go to dinner in a speedo or something.

Tip #2...Take plenty of underwear. Ports can be hot and sweaty, so kind of need fresh undies after that pre-dinner shower :o

Tip #3...Take half of everything else, as already said. Jeans are too hot. Days on board, bathing trunks and t-shirt are about the max you need. Days in port, a pair of shorts over the bathing suit. Casual dinners...unless you spill food all the time, 2 pairs of dockers should be plenty. You could get by with one, but then that food spill will happen! Minimize foot wear, as it eats space. Good shoes if you are going dressy. 1 pair each of sandals, and casual shoes...wear your sneaks getting on board.

Tip #4...RELAX.
Have a great time,
Marty

From my short experience on a cruise and the wonderful experience on this board... I've come to one conclusion... other than the dining room, I'm not worried one bit about having the wrong clothes or what others think... as said before, they are more interested in having a good time than what you are wearing....

Three shirts, three tank tops, three shorts, two capri's, and dress clothes. That is about all I will be bringing. It will all fit into ONE suitcase!!!!!

You would be suprised at how many days you can wear a plain tshirt (if it stays clean--four or five)....thing to do is bring clothes that all color match and then mix n match the shirts/shorts....The nights are so warm I tend to get out of my capri's and back into shorts/tank top!!!

I have ALL of the health/beauty carry on items I need, and the rest are the stuff I use on a daily basis....

I may not leave for 29 days, but you can't say I'm not organized!!!

Happy sailing!

Don't over pack! Most of what I took on my last trip didn't even get out of the suitcase. Your just hauling a lot of stuff around for nothing. Stick to the basics. Enjoy your Cruise!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a quote from carnivals FAQ

Do I need to pack my Hair Dryer?

A hair dryer is provided in the bathroom (Destiny, Triumph, Victory) or at the desk/vanity in the stateroom (Spirit, Pride, Legend, Conquest, Glory, Miracle, Valor, Liberty, Freedom, Splendor and Dream). Hair dryers are not provided in the staterooms of all other ships.

And - keep in mind if you are flying in, the surcharges and nuisance fees that airlines are charging for baggage. That might provide some incentive.

JayPatrick -
Just remember to start at your head, and go to your feet . By that, if your wear sunglasses, Reading Glasses, Caps, and ect. pack them. Follow that all the way to your feet. You should be able to pack everything you need in ( 1 ) piece of luggage.

Happy Cruising to all ;
David

Jay - I overpacked and thought I was packing conservatively. 3 outfits per day - workout, day, dinner. Well, i had a combined/"mixed" of the workout and day for the entire day and dress for dinner. I brought back about 40% of my clothes back clean and still folded.

Keep in mind it is now Carnival Casual.
