We had it on the NCL Dawn last Dec. Hubby loved it because he loves being spontaneous. I have to admit that I had reservations about service and even food quality, but was pleasantly surprised at how good both were. We are going on the Legend soon and he wants to try it there too. I've agreed, just to check it out, but overall, I still prefer assigned dining. I've been on 36 or so cruises and like having the same dining companions every night. Plus getting to know the servers as people. Had a Russian waiter on the Inspiration in May and he had some amazing stories to tell.
Last year on Princess we did not get our usual early seating, my father in law has health issues and can not do the late seating, so we went to the anytime dining and they were able to give us the same table, same wait staff each night and it did not feel any different than the set dining. We loved it since it was just like being in the main dining room.
Carnival Splendor (3 days of towing back to port)
Just got back from the Carnival Legend two weeks ago and loved how you can just walk up and be seated fairly quickly. We met some nice people who we took to dinner with us two of the nights which made our party 9 people one nite and 10 on the other and we never waited more than 3 minutes. We also had the same waiter each nite, which was probably a coincidence since we were at a different table each nite. We loved it!
I've done "anytime" on NCL, and have to admit that it worked out just fine. I too, however, still prefer traditional dining, with a BIG table. We really enjoy meeting up with the same folks every night, and discussing the days activities, and what is planned for the evening, plus having the same wait team every evening, makes for excellent service, and superior food. IMO, "Anytime" is O.K., but "Traditional" is excellent.
