Going on a 8 cruise next month on the Miracle out of NY...I will be in St Thomas on Oct 4th would like to go to St Johns any ideas on how do to this? I would rather not book thru Carnival. Is there a cheaper way?..on a tight budget this trip.
Very simple. Go outside the gates as soon as possible after the ship gets customs clearance. Tell them you need a taxi to the Ferry. They will take you to the Ferry terminal and the ferry runs every half hour and will take you to St. John's. Once you get to St. John's, get a taxi to Trunk Bay or wherever you're going. If you are going to Trunk Bay, ask the driver to stop so you can get out and take a pic. Go to Trunk Bay, beach it, snorkel whatever. They have an underwater trail you can follow. Have a great time and look for sea turtles while you're on the ferry. Just make sure you give yourself ample time to do a little shopping at Havesight (?) right outside the ship. St John itself as soon as you get there is quaint but we didn't play tourist we just went to Trunk Bay. By the way you can rent snorkels and fins. Trunk Bay is a national park with restroom facilities and showers to change after swimming. Just DON'T MISS THE SHIP!

My wife and I sailed on the Miracle a couple of years ago out of Tampa and we both LOVED the ship. However I still have flashbacks of those purple globe lights in the dining room.
We have been to Trunk Bay a couple of times, both through Carnival and on our own. Cruisecouple is right, take a cab (in St. Thomas cab generally have a flat rate to specific destinations and they are posted in the cab) to Red Hook and the ferry over to Cruz Bay on St John. From there take a cab to Trunk Bay. We found the ship's excursion only allowed you about and 1 1/2 hr to swim and snorkel at Trunk Bay while if you go it alone you can spend much of the day there. Be warned it does get crowded.
If you are on a tight budget and have never been to St. Thomas you might want to consider some of the beaches there, such as Magens Bay, Sapphire Beach or Coki Beach. In June of this year (on Carnival Liberty) my wife and I went to Sapphire Beach which was really beautiful, not as crowded and looks towards Trunk Bay. Cab ride was $10 p/p each way plus tip.
Cruisecouple, I see you're from Jersey. WHAT EXIT??? I'm origially from Jersey.
