Ok, gustav is bearing down on the gulf just as we are about to cruise to cozumel and grand cayman. what does carnival typically do in these situations. do they sail somewhere else, cancel???

Normally Carnival will not cancel, they will try to go to another port. They go around the storms. The only way I could see them cancelling is if the ship gets stuck in port. They will even depart from a diff port if they need to and bus people in etc.

that is good to know. the exact port is not that critical. i enjoy ship time usually more than port time. i have been to cozumel but not grand cayman so wouldnt mind stopping there, but as long as i am cruising i will have a good time.

You can probably expect rough seas, so you may consider getting a prescription for the patch from your doctor. If not that, be sure to OTC meds for motion sickness.

My concern regarding Gustav is that we leave on the 31st, when Gustav will be in the middle of the Gulf, flying to Anchorage. We live 20 miles from the Gulf Coast. Doesn't leave me with a real warm, fuzzy feeling!

I hope you guys on the gulf are safe, as are your homes! I envy you living so close, but living in dallas we only have to worry about tornados too much (my biggest fear by the way, next to sharks lol)

I also hope that this storm doesnt damage or cruising ports too severly.

This is all my husband's fault. He's been joking about cruising in a hurricane, and now it looks like it's a done deal.

As long as we can get on that ship, I'll be okay. Supposed to leave on the Ecstasy Sep 1. Might be a close thing, though.

Anyone know what the Conquest is doing this week?
Usually in Jamaica on Wednesday but Gustav will be awfully close by. I saw the announcement about Mariner of the Seas but that is the only itinerary change I've read. CURIOUS.

Thanks

They are not going to Jamaica. They are doing: Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Progreso this week.

Do take some patches with you. It will be rough going at sea with the high seas from the storm. Been there, done that!

Readytogonow --- I was about to ask where you are from until I saw the Texas..lol. I also live 7 miles from the coast - but in St. Mary Parish --- where the window is still strong. I think it is heading a little more east so YOU will be safe - not sure for me yet. Enjoy your cruise!

yea i live about 30 minutes away from dauphin island in alabama. we have hotel reservations for midtown mobile. we have a brick house but there are 2 giant oak trees in my front yard so my parents dont want to take any chances of them falling. we are heading to walmart tonight to get any and all supplies needed. we also filled up all our gas cans and my car today and we waited like 15 minutes in line just to get gas. seems like everyone else was thinking the same way. alabama has not had a direct hit since 1979. i have the worst feeling in the world about this storm. i know all the issues people had with katrina from new orleans, la to bayou la batre, al. i live about 10 minutes from bayou la batre and it had 8-10 feet of water from katrina in some areas. so another thing is flooding. so the only thing to do at this point is just pray that everything wont turn out as catastrophic as katrina did.

Thanks, Cheryl. We are in Alvin (due north of the Western end of Galveston Island). Let's hope this thing doesn't re-intensify and just fizzles out! It is such a scary feeling -- kind of like staring down a gun-barrell, when one of these things takes aim at you! Lot's of prayers going up!

I have a bad feeling too - it is heading right up my living room. Luckily I 'm off call and can get out of town - if I were on call, I would be forced to stay put at the hospital where I work. I am gassing up everything this pm and filling up 50 gal drum with gas for generator. I went through Katrina, Rita and the direct hit from Andrew years ago. I have a feeling that a glass of asti will await me each night until we hear something more. I am starting to pack my essentials - important papers, etc. Its scarey!

Our first cruise was the Holiday when it was sailing out of New Orleans and we loved it and were immediately hooked. Since then (Sept 03 we have sailed 11 more times and are booked on the Sensation this Sunday - August 31. The Holiday is small and the seas will be rough. Take your seasick meds ahead of time and just plan on having a good attitude in spite of the stormy weather. If you book Mexico excursions through Carnival and they are not able to honor them due to weather, they will credit your sail and sign card.

You are not supposed to carry alchohol in your luggage, but lots of people do. Just be sure to wrap and seal it or you will ruin your clothes. If they spot it, they will remove it. You can carry wine on in your carry on bag though.

Now... for my cruise this weekend. Leaving Mobile and my home to Gustav, my job is 3 minutes from Bayou la Batre and our cruise looks like it is in the path of Hanna. I've been through Camille, Frederick and Katrina and this one doesn't look real good. I think I'll just get on the ship and sleep for 4 days. Nassau's 10 day forecast shows thunderstorms every day, so I don't know if we will be able to do the Carnival Excursions we paid for there and in Freeport. All of excursion involve vessels, so Carnival just might have to cancel those.

Looks like I will have lots of company on the 31st. We have been watching the storm and it looks like rough seas the first evening but we should all be fine. I will probably hand in the atrium with a margarita. I have also heard about diverting to another port which is fine too. Always up for an adventure.

If they know in advance they will give you a letter upon check in. If not and they decide while at sea, they will announce it

I'd be curious to see how they are handling Gustav with ship Valor.

Valor is supposed to be around Mexico today, a sea day tomorrow crossing over on its way back to Miami. It's going to run right across Gustav in some form. ??

This season is crazy. Gustav and Hanna is out there plus 4 more maybe storms behind that. I hope everyone will be ok and things calm down. I suppose by 2 weeks those others will be out there too. Looks like any of us with sailings this month or next will be affected somehow

Being on a ship in a hurricane varies a lot. We've been through several. SOmetimes, you end up with really rough sea, but other times, they take the ship so far out of the way of the storm that you get amazingly calm waters. Plus, hurricanes tend to suck up any heat and humidity around them for a long ways, so you can end up with beautiful weather. It's Mother Nature, it's a cr$% shoot.
