Default When do you start packing for your cruise?

How early is too early? We sail in 18 days and typically I'm packing the day before, but I'm crazy excited and want to get started! Am I nuts?

Nope. I usually have my suitcase out early and start putting things in so I don't forget them. Then the day before.. I pull out all the "extra" clothes I put in there knowing I'm not going to wear them. HAHAHAH

If I buy over 15 months out, I start packing 15 months out

The day before, up until about 1 a.m. or so.

Although for my European cruise, I started two days early Bigger destination and not accessible at ALL should I have forgotten something...at least in the US it's almost possible to get something.

I pack, unpack, and repack about three times total

The actual packing starts about two or three days before the cruise. Moving the clothes to the spare bedroom occurs just before that so the official answer is "around four days".

BTW: My wife does the actual packing. I am not allowed to put on piece of clothing in a suitcase. I am allowed to pack "stuff" once she has given me permission.

Take care,
Mike

If I answer this honestly, I have to say "always". I used to have to fly on business with mere hours of warning, so got in the habit of keeping certain things ready to go. I carried this over to cruising. Have a cloth "notebook" with pages that are multiple clear plastic pockets. All of the sundry items like first aid kit, eyeglass repair, etc are in there permanently. I spent a long time accumulating small travel size versions of almost everything and this just makes it easier for me. I'm less likely to forget something too.
Re. clothes, etc. I have to discipline myself not to start packing the minute we book a cruise. About a week in advance, I open the starting gate and away I go...pulling out what I think I want to wear, then weeding through it all, since I have never worn everything I took with me. Maybe one day I'll go with one change of clothing and see how I do. NOT A CHANCE!

I have to admit- We booked our Alaska cruise (Sept 22 on Millenium) on Aug 10 and I have been adding to the pile almost ever day since!! Mostly stuff, like umbrella, binoculars, cameras, over the door pockets, etc.
I have all the clothes hanging up in the spare room but really have no clue exactly what I will need until the last minute as the weather is so unpredictable! It could be in the 50's and nice, or there could already be snow on the ground! As far as I can tell, ours is the last cruise ship to go through for the season, so some of the shore excursion possibilities may be limited. It does sound like most of the smaller towns are easily walkable, and we have boat chartered for our group for the day in Juneau. I am not really worried about it, but what I need to pack could be radically different depending on the 5 day forcast!! Aside from a 99% chance of rain, anything is possible! But I AM making the piles and trying to resist opening the suitcases just yet!
We are taking Amtrak from Southern CA to Vancouver and have to pack a small overnighter for that trip-it will be our carry-on for embarkation as well. I CAN HARDLY WAIT!!

A year ahead, if I let myself!!! Ha Ha!

Actually, maybe weekend before or so..I have a bin that I keep "cruise clothes" in. I try to wait for sales and buy some new stuff to take and then I have it all in one place to pack.

No matter how early or last minute that I pack, I almost always end up unpacking and re-packing a few times....It just really makes it all real for me when I see those packed suitcases..

The lovely Mrs. Jones (Vita) usually starts packing 2 or 3 weeks before embarkation. I, on the other hand, start, and end packing the day before embarkation. I find that if I start too early, I forget things, but if I do it all in one shot, then I remember everything I need.

I start tossing "things" into my suitcase about a month before sailing. Stuff like:

Sunscreen
my first aid stuff with antibiotic, bandaids, aspirins, antacids, etc.
insulated mug/straws
anything I won't wear until the cruise

I actually start packing as soon as my parents get the suitcases out of the shed. We keep them in huge garbage bags until the next cruise rolls around. Thats generally 1-4 months before the cruise. If I dont have it before the countdown gets to 30 days I go get it myself. I hate last minute packing, but every single time it never fails the night before we leave I'm dumping my suitcase out to repack everything double and triple checking that I have packed everything I am going to need. So I'm gonna say a month before.

I leave in 4 days and I am putting things in the guest bedroom today. I am laying it all out on the bed first. I will be adding to it for the next couple of days. The night before I leave, I will put it in the luggage. I am getting so excited. I hope the hurricanes don't hold me back though. If you have room to start getting it together, then you go for it. It feels good to start thinking about a cruise. Have a great cruise!!

Since our trip is in Dec this year. I figure when I start packing away my summer cloths to take my fall clothes out I can start the packing for the cruise. Just lay a fabric sheet in the suite case and they should all smell fresh. I have bought a lot of summer clearance items for the cruise. So I have been buying and storing things for a little while .

Usually 1 week before we cruise. Everything is packed and downstairs sitting by the door the night before we leave.

Our intentions is to pack the week of the cruise but for some reason we end up packing the day we leave. Normally, we get off of work, start packing and when we're done, get in the car and go. Talk about last minute!

So far, no change this week either. Our ship leave Saturday and nothing packed yet. Go figure.

We leave next week, and I'm doing the same thing you are. We are also doing this to make sure we have everything we need - gotta have time to run to the mall for any items (I'm already noticing I need some dress shoes for the new dress).

The night before, say around 8. That way, I don't forget anything. But, I do start picking up sundries the week before that we need. There is some planning involved.

It is so nice to know that I am not the only that this happens too. My wife will double check just to see if I put something in the suitcase that she did not approve. The funny part is she is usually correct on her choices.

Normally, I start packing about a week before. But this time, I have not yet even started and we leave early tomorrow morning to drive down to Tampa. So I'd better get to packing. (Just hope the power doesn't go out. It's flickered a few times. Hanna is right on top of us at the moment.)

SharHite - you must be on the same cruise as we are. Inspiration right? Like you said in a previous post - the worst thing that can happen is an extra day at sea - oh dear!. We just booked on Thursday and didn't expect Ike to enter the Gulf. We live in the Gulf area and were hit dead on with Charley. Have the hurricane shutters up, the dog is going with us to Tampa (daughter lives there) so all is well. Hopefully your power won't go out and do have a safe drive to the Port.

I start to get things ready about a week before, but nothing goes into the suitcase until the night before.
