Default Nautical Miles..

Just wondering why a nautical mile is longer than a standard land mile. I think its around 6100 feet or so. What else can anybody tell me about how they measure distance?

Thanks in advance..

A nautical mile or sea mile is a unit of length. It corresponds approximately to one minute of latitude along any meridian.

1 nautical mile = 1.1508 mi

I think it is longer due to the curvature of the earth. Where a statute mile is a straight line.

Statutory miles have more to do with the Romans or something like that. Pre-metric land measures were driven by the person in charge - why else do you call a 12 inch measuring stick a "ruler"

ok what does that mean?
Meridians are lines of longitude (the ones that go North & South). There are 360 degrees on each Meridian all the way around. Each degree is divided into 60 minutes, each minute is divided into 60 seconds. So nautical mile is 1/21600 of the earths circumfrance. Should work at the equater too - give or take a bump or two.

1 mile plus 796.224 feet. Or 6076.224 feet

You can convert the .224 into inches.

Take care,
Mike
