Default Carnival Magic

Has anyone heard anything about where they might homeport the Magic? I was just wondering where it would go.

NEW ORLEANS. They made the announcement when they held the news conference on bringing the Triumph to NOLA.

They never said they would homeport the Magic in New Orleans. Does anyone else think or know where they will homeport the Magic?

Sorry but there are several sources for this information that the Magic stands a good chance of going to New Orleans.

Here is part of the article that was in the New Orleans newspaper.

The announcement Tuesday by Carnival and Port of New Orleans officials is the first step toward re-creating the thriving cruising market that existed here before Hurricane Katrina. A new mega-ship, the Carnival Magic, scheduled to debut in 2011, might be based here if the Triumph is a success.

Here is another article where the Director of the Port of New Orleans makes the same statement.
"It's a big jump that will help to get us back. And if it works, I think that in 2011 we stand a very good chance of getting the Carnival Magic, a brand new ship the size of the Conquest," Jumonville said.

Oh sorry i haven't seen that. The Carnival Magic is actually 30,000 tons bigger than a Conquest class ship. So they will probably put a Conquest class ship there before they put the Magic there. Sorry to burst your bubble! I think Long Beach has a good chance of getting the Magic because next year the Splendor ( bigger than the Conquest class) is going to Long Beach. So if they Splendor works out good then the Magic might go there. That is good news to me because I live 2 hours away from Long Beach. Or it might even go to Miami.

I think you are not seeing what Carnival is looking at. Big ship on east coast-Dream. Big ship on west coast-Splendor. Big ship on Gulf Coast-Magic.

Magic would go to doing a 7 day schedule and the Triumph will revert back to a 4/5 day or be replaced with a Fantasy class ship. Or the other option would be continue on the 4/5/7 schedule and pull the Triumph out.

I can't see the Magic going to NOLA either. The customer base just doesn't account for that.

By ALAN SAYRE, Associated Press Writer
Thu Jul 10, 2:15 AM ET

Between July 1, 2006, and July 1, 2007, its population jumped 13.8 percent to 239,124, according to the bureau's latest statistics on cities with populations of at least 100,000. But Rigamer said the population report doesn't make New Orleans a boom town.

"We aren't fast-growing," he said. "We're recovering. It's good people are coming back, but you can't put us in with Houston. Come on."

On the 7-night sailings, the majority of the passengers are from outside the New Orleans area. It was one of the many reasons that the Triumph was not put into New Orleans Sept '07. The Fantasy was not getting enough bookings from outside the area. Part of the reason had to do with the 4/5 night schedule. A lot of folks wont fly to do a 4 or 5 nighter.

Now that folks are seeing the tourist areas are back up and going, they will start coming back to New Orleans. A lot of growth can happen in the three years that remain. The Poland Avenue Cruise Facility is still on the books to be built which will give NOLA a third terminal for cruise ships.

The problem might not be anything except the size......we sailed the Conquest out of NOLA and going down the river and making those turns for about 6-8 hours was hard enough to navigate with the size of the Conquest....I can't imagine a bigger ship trying it.

The ship is not that much larger than the Conquest

Conquest/Splendor 952' beam 116'
Dream/Magic 1004' beam 121.3'

You are only talking another 52' feet in length and 5.3' in width.

But that is a lot when having to navigate a big ship like that. Also it is 30,000 tons bigger. If they do put the Magic in NO they will probably put the Triumph somewhere else. But I really don't see them putting the Magic in NO. If they wanted to put a bigger and newer ship in the Gulf coast they would probably homeport the Magic in Galveston, Texas. Galveston hadn't got a different ship for a long time, but NO would of just got a different ship in 2009 and then they put another different ship in NO in 2011. I don't think they will do that. I think that they put the Triumph in NO with already knowing where the Magic would go when it comes out in 2011.

Galveston already stole one ship from New Orleans; it won't happen again. Galveston doesn't really have to worry about New Orleans, however, they need to worry about the Port of Houston.

Even at it's peak, the population of New Orleans was less than half of the metropolitan area. It is a centrally located Gulf port for passengers who drive, so draws from Houston, Memphis, Jackson, Fla Panhandle, even up to Chicago, etc. It was also the one of the fastest growing cruise ports anywhere. It will get there again.

At it's peak, New Orleans was regularly turning around two large ships on the same day. That was before the new cruise terminal was added, and an additional cruise terminal is scheduled to be built a little downriver from the existing ones.

While far from a slam dunk, the original source that New Orleans is under consideration as the home port for Magic came from Terry Thornton with Carnival.

The existing cruise ship dock length is 2500 feet and the facilities have been upgraded to handle the largest ships planned so the size of Magic isn't an issue.

There is plenty of room to turn a ship much larger than Conquest class, and the river itself is maintained so ships with much deeper drafts have no problem.

I can't wait!

Like I have said and many other people have said I do not see Carnival home-porting the Magic there. They wouldn't put the Magic there with the uncertainty of not filling up the ship. If they can't always fill up the Fantasy and the Magic is over double the size of the Fantasy why would they put the Magic there. If they put the Magic there and they can't fill it up, it would be a disaster moving it. They would have to cancel peoples cruises, find another ship to go there, etc. It would be so much work. I really don't see Carnival taking that big of a risk. So many people would be mad because it would disturb there vacations.

We all truly know and realize, even if begrudgingly, that ALL new ships are homeported on the Florida coast because of the proximity to the corporate offices. New Orleans is not a choice as much as people will wish. The other chat site ran a long winded thread that the Carnival Freedom was originally going to be home ported in Galveston and even discussed getting a trip together to get onto her for the maiden voyage.

The Magic will be in F L O R I D A !!

Your post is not accurate.

Carnival is already replacing Fantasy next year with Triumph which is a larger ship. That shows that bookings are indeed strong on Fantasy and warrant a larger ship in New Orleans. They also know the mis-perceptions by some and false rumors being spread by others have faded, though no doubt, there will be die hards out there.

If bookings on Triumph are strong there is little doubt that New Orleans will be the homeport for Magic.

Since Carnival will be doing new itineraries on Triumph from New Orleans - instead of the boring Jamaica-Grand Cayman-Cozumel route, bookings can't help but be strong.

It is also Carnival's way to test market for longer cruises from the city.

Don't forget that prior to Katrina, Carnival had 2 ships in New Orleans, NCL 1, and RCCL 1. And that was before the new cruise terminal.

Look for the Magic to be home ported in New Orleans!

Not all NEW Carnival ships are homeported to Florida because the Splendor will be in Florida for a little while and then homeported to Long Beach.

I still don't think that the Magic will be homeported in New Orleans. It is most likely to be homeported to Flordia, then California, then Texas, and then maybe New Orleans. That is the order it is probably in when they decide to homeport a ship. There first choice is Florida, then CA, and so on. Also they need to have a 7, 4, 5 schedule becuase every other port except mobile has a Fantasy and a bigger ship. So they have a 7 day cruise, 3, 4, or 5 day cruise too. I don't think they will but the Magic at a 7, 4, 5. It is too new and big of a ship to do that and new orleans needs that kind of schedule. I don't see them putting a second ship in New Orleans because they must have not had a lot of bookings because they pulled a Conquest and a Fantasy class ship and now they are down to a Triumph class ship. Which is 100,000 tons. So they went from 200,000 tons of ship in New Orleans to 70,000 tons now to 100,000. So the booking must be a little stronger but not strong enough to double the pax in New Orleans.

How else thinks that they will put the Magic in Galveston before they put her in New Orleans. I just want to know because that is what I think. Galveston has to have a stronger cruise market because they have a large and small sized ship. All NOLA had is a medium size ship comming. So the Galveston is a more popular cruise port. So if they want to put a big ship on each side it is most likely to be coming to Galveston.

You are entitled to your opinion. However, New Orleans was original home port of Carnival Conquest, a new ship and a new class of ship. It has been done before and was extremely successful. No doubt there were similar doubting Thomases at the time.

Galveston used to have Princess, but no more. Houston used to have an NCL ship. For as large as the metropolitan area of Houston is, significantly larger than the state of Louisiana, the demand that should be there, certainly isn't.

As previously mentioned, Galveston needs to worry about the new cruise terminal in Houston, where the Carnival ships are currently cruising from, and not the new cruise terminal in New Orleans, with another new cruise terminal in the planning phase for New Orleans.

Once the kinks in the Houston terminal are worked out, Carnival may discover that people prefer it over Galveston.
