Default Shore Excursions......Kinda limited???

I went to carnival.com to schedule a shore excursion. Boy was I disappointed! No dolphin encounter and a lot of other excursions aren't available during our sailing. I sure hope Cruisemates has something great planned!

One of the great folks here at CM shared the below info with me. I've wanted to go to Sancho's, the east side of the island, for awhile now.
Looks like this trip I just might get there.

If not this trip then we will be back in Cozumel a month after BLOG2NOLA on a company cruise with Liz' group.

Phil & Liz

Begin paste here------------------

Another option is Nachi Cocom which has does not have the ATV or horseback riding options...but also have a $50 all inclusive which includes all you can drink and one 3 course meal. NC's pool is bigger with a swim up bar...but Mr. Sanchos offers the all inclusive as an "option".

This is the email I received recently from Mr. Sanchos:

Yes the $50 us included alchoholic drinks and all you can eat except lobster!!!!

Dear friend,

We offer free entrance,no cover!! so you can enjoy the most beautiful beach, we open from 9 am to 5:30 pm everyday.

We attach information regarding horse back riding, atv´s and activities on the beach club.

Note: Cost for Wave runner 1/2 hour is $ 60 usd and $ 120 usd for 1 hour.

HORSE BACK RIDING on the beach and the jungle 1/2 hour $30 usd one hour $40 usd
We assign horses according to weight and experience.

ATV BEACH AND JUNGLE TOUR 1/2 $40 usd great trails and sand dunes for great riding.

Is not necesary to make reservations, just ask any of the staff members when you arrive to the club and they´ll help you.

We accept Visa,Mc,Traveller checks,us currency or pesos.

The day pass is $ 50 usd per person drinks and lunch all day OR pay as you go, your choice!!!! ( please ask for Oliver when you arrive at bech club if you have questions )

Tequila Seminar is done every hour cost on site per person is $ 70 usd

The taxi fare to Mr. Sanchos is $ 15 usd between one to 4 person and is about 15 km which mean 15 minutes away.

We have Restaurant and Bar,beach beds, chairs, umbrellas, palapas, pool, showers, bathrooms, lockers and changing rooms.

If you need more information,do not hesitate to contact us as we´ll be pleased to help you.

Thank you for your interst in Mr. Sanchos´s.

Mr Sanchos is a really good option.

There is no doubt going to be a "Blogger's Beach Party" option put together by John too.

And I'm sure you'll find many other Carnival shore excursions added to the list as the time gets closer.

Not sure why they don't just post all options to begin with, but they don't. If you want to do something like swim with the dolphins, I'm sure they'll offer it, but it's only available at Chakannaab Park.

There will be no shortage of great choices in Cozumel.
Progreso the Garden Spot of Mexico might be more of a challenge.

Mel, there is another option for shore excursions .... check out the web site of Cozumel Insider. Sherry is the owner /operator and has numerous links to all sorts of activites & excursions on the island.
I booked the Royal Dolphin swim through her site a couple of years ago. It was the BEST Cozumel experience I've had. Another time (on a separate trip) we booked a tour of the Island that carried an ice chest for you and went to a local store where you bought .... ummm ..... supplies & ice . Then they brought you to the "other side" of the Island where the beaches were beautiful & bars were MUCH less crowded, you could have up to 3 different stops along the way. I think that's what the tour was called ..."Beaches and Bars Along the way"
Anyway, don't be fooled by the few tours offered on the Carnival site, there will be plenty to do.
Like Kuki said, John will have Bloggers Beach party, I,m waiting for details on that before I book anything else.

It's getting closer & closer 8) 8) 8)

In Progresso, Merida is the place to go, so I hear...Last time I was there, was post surgery, so I stayed on the ship..my pal went to Merida, and adored it so much, he has been there on land trips many times.

I am wondering if we will have time to do the cemetary tour..what do you think?

Trip, thanks I was wondering what to do in Progresso. I think thats one of the few ports on that side of Mexico we haven't been to. We'll be sure to check it out.

I can't imagine anyone running out of options in Cozumel. It is one of those ports that really has it all if you are willing to do a little research. We love to just rent a car here and drive to a new destination everytime we visit. Cozumel has a main artery that circles the island. Most of the attractions will be off that main road, or you can always take a cab to where you want to go. Cozumel is a great way push the EZ button.

If you are interested in spending the day at an ecological park seeing a crocodile preserve (watch them feeding a few feet below you) a few minor ruins, and swimming or snorkelling at one of National Geographics most beautiful beaches and climb up to the top of a lighthouse. Then go to Punta Sur, or book the ships Eco Jeep & Snorkel tour if it becomes available. It's very easy to get to by rental car.

Along the way to Punta Sur which is at the furthest end of the island (probably a 20 minute drive from port) there are all the places listed above. Chankanaab has a restaurant, bar, beach, gift shop etc.. plus the sea critters, dolphin experience and all that stuff.

Mr Sanchos and Nachi is along there too and a host of other options. If anyone wishes to rent a car, I would recommend they go to Ace/Executive Car rental's website or hertz or avis which ever is less expensive and reserve one online. Then go to the Executive Car Rental office at the port (which ever port we dock in, it doesn't really matter) and they will generally match the rate you have on your confirmation. Mexico is one place you always want to purchase the damage waiver as they will detain you until the damages have been paid, should you get in an accident in Mexico. Also if you should rent a car, be certain to ask where the gas station is on the way back and which pump to use at the gas station to get the best price (as I recall it was the green one last time we were there)...always make sure they pump has been zero'd out before pumping or you may end up paying for the guy's gas who pumped before you.

Or you could just take a cab.

Or you can look at Shore Trips website
http://shoretrips.com/common/search3...=CAR&lcode=CZM

I booked once with Shoretrips, unfortunately the tour operator's boat was damaged in a hurricane as I recall and they were kind enough to contact me immediately and issue a very speedy refund which impressed me. They certainly have a lot listed.

I don't see any excursions listed for Progreso - wondering if they are renegotiating or it they might switch to Costa Maya?

As for Progreso, here are some things I've done there. I think the port really gets a bum rap.

Punta Sur is awesome. Here are some pictures from there:

You can book dolphin excursions directly with the company:

hey Bill

Yes Progreso is one of our favorites and it does get a bum rap.

Doubt they would have time to do Costa Maya. I'll be there (CM) in January and looking forward to seeing the 'new & improved' version.

Thanks for the photo links.

Costa Maya should be doable. Fantasy used to stop in Costa Maya and Cozumel before Hurricane Dean blew CM away. But if not, I won't be disappointed with Progreso.

My Christmas cruise will be stopping in CM. Looking forward to it.

ZC do you ever go over to Chac Chi? It's the place to the right of the pier on the other side of the wall. I don't know if you've heard about the hole in the fence or not, but basically the port developer was trying to cut off access to this place by building a wall so people could not get to Chac Chi. I exchanged emails with the owner shortly after the hurricane and it sounded like they were going to rebuild. When you are there in December, if you have time can you take a few pics of that area. It should be readily visible from the ship if they haven't changed where the docks were.

FYI-Yesterday Martha Stewart did her entire show about Merida and Yucatan cooking. Most filmed on location. Very cool. Merida is very different for sure.

Bill, Wish we could do CM & Coz on a 5-day from Texas. Just too far.

ZC I guess I should have mentioned that I am talking about Costa Maya, sorry about that.

I really don't care which port we go to, Progresso or Costa Maya. But have been wondering if they will change it back to Costa Maya since it is open again.

Chac Chi is my middle name (along with many other middle names). I'll be in touch with Joaquin again before I go. I do know the wall survived Hurricane Dean but should still be reachable. I plan on trying to check out after a snorkel excursion.

Here are some pictures from better days - Note to others - this is Costa Maya, not Progreso

On a 7 day out of Galveston, we made it to Progreso, Cozumel, and Belize on Elation. If they would skip the sea days, it's doable.

Thanks ZC, let me know how you find the Rivero's. I was not so secretly hoping the wall would bite the dust. Oh well. I heard from Joaquin right after the hurricane and emailed him again a while after that and didn't get a response, so I am very interested how they are doing. I hope all is well. When we were there last they were working on the large center palapa and then the storm took it out. I felt so bad for them.

I haven't written in about 6 months, so probably due again.

These were the last messages:

"Hi,

We hope that Chac-Chi will be open by the time that cruises return to Costa Maya. It has been a bit hard and slow to get the place cleaned up because of the difficulties to introduce machinery to do the job. We are still in the process of cleaning our place. We still don't know what facilities we will have by that time, as the arrival date come near we will have a more clear view of what we can accomplish.
Cruisers will be welcome to our place as always and we hope that they continue to enjoy our place.

Joaquin R. "

also

"Thanks for your kind words, the best way you can help us is telling your friends and cruise passengers about our place. , unfortunately the wall didn't fall, but hopefully there will better and easier way to get in next time you come by.

Joaquin R."

Hi,

Chac-chi will be open only on Cruise days. We have only have drinks and sodas available. We are still unable to open the restaurant. We hope to have it running by next year.

We will have the same problems to getting in prior to the hurricane. We are working toward making a road that will facilitate the access for our customers.

Regards,

Joaquin R.

Hey that sounds good to me! I'd love to have a drink st Chac Chi, sounds good to me!.

I will have to dig out the pics we took there. The sand is like white powder. My kids had a ball playing in the tidal pools looking for critters.

Cart before horse as far as our cruise is concerned.

Although good info as I'll be there in January.

Looks like they finally added tours for Progreso so I guess that is where we are going.

There is also a Dolphin Encounter and more listed under Cozumel.

As it turns out, probably nothing to do with this cruise, unless they switch Progreso and Costa Maya, but that is doubtful at this point.

Be that as it may, here are some pictures from Costa Maya including what is left of Chac-Chi:

Regardless whether our cruise visits there or not it i good to see that the Rivero's are still hanging in there and Chac Chi is still there to some extent. It's pretty sad to see all of the destruction still so evident.

Thanks for the pics and updates ZC.

For those familiar with Chac-Chi (since it was mentioned here), Joaquin is looking for some input to see what people would like. here is the email he has been sending out:

"Hi,

Currently we are under construction to build once more a beach club for you. We have several ideas for the new beach club and we would like to know what you think about them.

This place is for you and we would love to know your vision of our place.

This survey will only take a couple of minutes and will help us give you a better service.

Feel free to send this survey to your friends or possible cruise ship passengers.

http://chacchi.com/survey/index.php?sid=53733&newtest=Y

Thanks,

Joaquin R."

Well I'd like to personally take a wrecking ball to that wall. I think the lounges and white sand is beautiful, full service bar and fresh seafood ought to do it.

The kids loved the rocky rugged coastline there. They had a ball exploring the rocks for sea critters when the waves rolled out.

I really liked it there because it was quiet and peaceful.
