Yes, there are different types, if you booked an 8A-8E you have a regular sized balcony, an 8 G is an extended Balcony and a 9A is a premium balcony. Catogories 11 and 12 are suites. The suites on Freedom have a whirl pool tub and seating room, but I think the balconies are standard size. Here is a lay out of deck 7 (empress) on Freedom. If you go to the web page this symbol shows Extended balcony 50% larger than Standard balcony. On this deck plan only the 9A and 8G cabin have this symbol. 7445 and 7440 are the 9A rooms. The 8Gs are all the aft cabins. Here is a link to freedom's deck plan. http://www.carnival.com/Deck_Plan.aspx?shipCode=FD I did get to see one of the 9A cabins on Freedom and it was so great you could fit a ton of people on that balcony. I had a standard balcony which was nice but only fits two people. I hope this helps you.

I am on the Valor Lido deck 8D 9262. Should I spend the money for a upgrade balcony?

Have you ever had a balcony before? We have never had a 9A or 8G room (out of the budget). Just the regular, also my hubby doesn't want to be aft he likes see the stuff of the side of the ship. On an Aft 8G Cabin, I would think while you are docked your view won't be very good. However, if I did upgrade it would be to a 9A they are on the corners and the balconies are huge. Here we are I put 9A into a photo gallery search. This is a 9A on the Conquest. Because it's on a corner it looks like you would have a side and back view.

The suites have wider balconies than the normal cabins but only because the room itself is wider and the balcony runs the full width of the cabin. The balcony isn’t any deeper and still has 2 chairs and 1 small table.

I would like to try the wrap around cabins in the back once but my wife really enjoys watching the flying fish and I don’t know if you could see any back there.
