Default Liberty European plans scrapped

Looking at the following, we were very lucky. We had been looking at cruising on Carnival Liberty to Russia next year, but hadn't been able to.

Carnival today issued the following press release .....

Carnival Cruise Lines has cancelled its 2009 European summer schedule from Dover, blaming "current market conditions".

Carnival’s Miami-based Carnival Liberty was scheduled to move to Dover in spring 2009 for 12 and 13-night cruises to Northern and Western Europe, but will now remain in Florida to operate year-round Caribbean cruises.

The decision was based on "current market conditions, continued economic uncertainty and high air costs to Europe which impact US visitors wishing to cruise in Europe", the line said.

All UK customers booked on Carnival Liberty will receive a full refund or offered alternative cruises with sister Carnival Corporation brands, including Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and P&O Cruises.

Lynn Narraway, Carnival Cruise Lines’ UK managing director, said: “We would like to apologise for the disruption this will cause our UK passengers, and our trade partners who have worked so hard with us to build up our ex-UK cruise presence in the UK market.

“As international operators, we are focusing on our core Miami and Port Canaveral cruises, which continue to be most popular for the UK market, and which also remain perennially popular with US passengers, especially in the current economic climate.”

Carnival said UK passengers will be written to this week via their travel agent. Guests can choose to rebook on the new Carnival Dream, which will be launched in Italy in autumn 2009 offering Mediterranean cruises out of Rome.

Passengers choosing this option will receive an extra $50 onboard credit.

We already got bounced from the Freedom to Liberty when they cancelled that cruise now we get it again. Somebody's tying to tell us something. Guess we'll just stay home.

Oh no Landlubber, that's awful - perhap you should change your nickname, it seems to be having a bad affect

So do you know what you'll try to go for next, or is it too early to think?

You could book a cruise on the Carnival Dream which is doing Europe cruises.

If I could get the same deal as I had for Liberty I might consider it. But I'm betting the price will go up .We'll see.

It will be higher no matter what becuase it is a brand new ship and like you said it will probably go up even more becuase it is the only ship doing Europe cruises.

We have changed ours to the Carnival Dream, but it is going to cost us a lot more money. We were booked under the military rate on Liberty, and so far, the Dream isn't offering a military rate. I'm planning to look for other European cruises and possibly changing to another one.

I was booked on the Liberty TA, and when I first asked, was told I could not be given the same deal on the Dream. The next day, my carnival vacation planner called me - offering - you guessed it, the same price and the same cabin we had booked on the Liberty. Plus the shipboard credit going from the $200 we had before, to $250. Apparently corporate had just approved honoring the same price on the Dream for passengers who had their Liberty cruise canceled.

So I bet you can get the same deal. I had already found a TA with similar ports and dates as on the Liberty cruise, and not thrilled about waiting until next October.

Thanx for the info Tink. You're ahead of me . Carnival hasn't even officially informed me of the cancellation. In fact on their site I can still pull up our docs complete with cabin # and luggage tags.

Thanks Alan. By the time I was offered that good deal on the Dream, I had already found a transatlantic on Celebrity with some of the same ports. I had already bought fantastic airfare, and done so much planning for this april cruise. I'm pretty "eh" on waiting until next October for this cruise, so I'm biting the bullet & going to pay the higher fare for the cruise on the century.

We're now booked on the Dream for next Sept. After having our cruise on Freedom and then on Liberty cancelled,we asked our T.A. to contact CLL and ask for the same deal ( a pretty good one) on Dream.Otherwise we would cancel. To my surprise ,they went for it and even threw in another $50.00 credit.Hope the third time is the charm. BTW, I think this is the first cruise for this ship.
