Default Need to start planning Alaska Excursions - need suggestions!

Going to Alaska in May - time to start planning and saving for excursions which I always book online. We are going to Juneau, Ketchicans, Sitka and Skagway. Any suggestions on any of these ports? I am about 90% sure we are going to do the Glacier Treck via helicopter in Juneau but its like 400.00 pp so still thinking on if its worth it. I hear it is. We will be in Juneau 16 hours - so may be able to do two excursions??? Any feedback on any of these ports? We have done the whale watching, train ride white pass railway so don't want to do that again. Am thinking Juneau and Skagway may be our expensive ports - and Ketchicans may leave to lumberjacking and not sure what to do in Sitka. I am posting this on the Alaska board and this board because the Alaska board doesn't get looked at to often. Thanks!

Kayaking in Sitka was the best excursion we took on our Alaska cruise in August. The 2 person kayaks had rutters for steering and were very easy to control even though we had never been kayaking before. The company provided rain gear for everyone and the guides were excellent.

Skagway: White Pass Railroad . Out of 8 cruises that ranks as my favorite shore excursion. I was lucky enough to get clear weather and witnessed breathtaking views.
Sitka: I enjoyed simply walking around town and seeing the Russian Orthodox "Cathedral", Bishop's house, Shelton Jackson museum, and so on. A tour ticket might be required to get a seat for the Russian dance show. See the show if you can ! The raptor center was also wonderful, but requires transportation.
Ketchikan: the float-plane to Misty Fjord National Monument. This place if fantastic. To me it reminded me of Yosemite National Park if it were to be flooded by the ocean. Ketchikan itself is a lovely town. Do go to Creek Street and say "Hi" to Dolly for me.
Juneau: I enjoyed Mendenhall Glacier and the cable car ride up Roberts Mountain. The second time around I did "Guide's choice nature hike" on perseverance trail.

We did the Dog Sled ride in Swagway and loved it. Here is the video of our ride.

They also had sled dog puppies so cute.

Wow! Thanks!!!!!!! I think I will do the dog sled thing - but on a glacier would be better. :-)

I think too - I'll do the suggestion in Sitka, Ketchicans and Juneau that you recommended Thoth! - maybe the Trec in Juneau however.

I hope ya'll enjoy Alaska as much as I did !
Shore excursions can be a bit pricey however they tend to be worth the money.
For Sitka, I booked a tour which included a town tour, the Raptor Center, and the Russian Dancers.

I would have loved to do the dog sled on the Glacier, but it was a little out of my price range. However, I loved this dog sled excursion. The musher give a talk about the iditarod. So half the group listened to the talk the other half took the sled ride, then we switched. I wanted to sneak one of those puppies back on the ship, but they were to wiggly.

We are going to Alaska in May 09 for the second time in less than two years.

Our must do excursion is the White Pass RR in Skagway.

A trip to the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau is worth going on.

Ketchikan & Sitka just strolling around town and looking in the
different shops. Every port has the "Diamonds r us " shops.
Looking in the Russian shops is the most interesting.

The worst port of call in Alaska is still better than the best in the Caribbean, in many ways at least. Natural beauty, authenticity, safety, culture, historical charm, and fun things to do.
On safety, let's face it...I don't think one could get mugged in Ketchikan even if they wanted to.
The only thing the Caribbean has on Alaska is weather and water sports.

I loved Alaska. I did not want to go since I HATE being cold, but it wasn't that bad and it was truly unspoiled beauty. My favorite is Glacier Bay, but I did not have a single port that was less than great. Ketchikan, I enjoyed the Native American village. Sitka I just walked around. Hubby rented a bicycle and rode through the rain forest. Did Mendenhall and whale watching in Juneau, White Pass train and bus combo in Skagway. Obviously, these are multiple trips. The people were amazingly friendly and gracious too. I would go back in a heartbeat, but DH hates flying and it is a lot further from Florida, where we are now versus L.A. where we lived before.
Sigh...great memories.
