Default Do you prefer bigger ships or smaller ones?

Just back from a cruise on the Holiday and we hated it. The ship rides very rough compared to the Valor and Carribean Princess we have sailed on before. The wife and I have decided never to sail a smaller ship like that again and to just stick to the bigger vessels.

Give me your opinions.....Do you like bigger ships or smaller ones and how big is too big?

I don't prefer anything over 2500 and really enjoy the smaller ships. The Jubilee was our first and was just fine with me. Didn't have to worry about some obnoxious big screen blaring commercials at me on those ships!

I like both smaller and larger ships. Sailed on a smaller ship to Bermuda and yes it was a bumpy ride being in the Atlantic, but smaller ship are more intimate. We met some of the nicest ppl on that cruise. Have also sailed some larger ones (Carnival Liberty and Caribbean Princess) that both had big screens, and never saw a single commercial. There is more to do on these ships though.

How big is too big? IMO there is no such thing. I can't wait to set foot on OAS.

I prefer the bigger ships. I like the 100,000 tonne ships and up, but I would think twice about a ship larger than size of the Dream. I wouldn't be caught on ANY of RCI's bigger ships because of the size and activities they cater to (sporty people--me no sporty...).

I LOOVE the Conquest class ships. I love the stepped down area between Panorama. I'll be on the Splendor next year and that will de different as the Lido deck is quite different.

Just a month or so ago, when we first started the CruiseMates Blogs, I wrote about this topic...

http://www.cruisemates.com/blog/2008...d-cruisemates/

The largest ship I've personally sailed had 3800 pass. , the smallest 128.. and a few in between .

I prefer larger ones. They usually sale a lot smoother. Also the bigger ships usually have more to do.

i prefer the 80 to 110 thousand ton ships. was on the explorer of the seas a few years back (138 thousand tons) ansd it was too crowded. could never get a decent spot with a lounge chair, or even a lounge chair!

We have done both large ships (RCI Mariner ) and
HAL ( Volendam & Veendam). We found the difference depended more on the cruise line then the size of the ship . As the route affects the ride.
We where on the Volendam thru Hispanolia Canal and the Mariner as well.
The ride wasn't any different./

When I said large ships I meant like not over 130,000 tons. I don't think I would ever go on the Oasis of the Seas, it is just way too much people. I don't care how big the ship is it just seems way too big. It holds 5,400 people. I think that is way too many people to be with when you are in the middle of the ocean.

Just think of it this way. If anyone has ever been on a Conquest class ship, double it. The Conquest class ships are 110,000 tons and the Oasis of the Seas is 220,000 tons.

Any cruise ship is great to me. However, I prefer the bigger ships, because they have more stuff. I like to be on the move, I don't go on vacation to kick it by the pool, I need more. Also I have a good memory so I pick up a ship's layout fast. I would love to try the Oasis of the seas, when are they bring it over to the West Coast?

We like the Spirit class....especially the 5A cabins.

The ship is a good size with 700 less passengers than the Conquest class.

Like with many things in life, there are trade-offs. Both big and relatively smaller ships have their merits. Smaller ships are better for seeing your newer friends more than once. On these sailing we are relatively more persons and less a number. The mega big ships seem to ride much better and offer more activities, but at times we can get lost in a crowd. The biggest liability with 100,000 + ton ships is the long walking from aft to forward. Who needs a fitness gym when walking from dinner to the show lounge? And the stateroom is NEVER close to anything either !
My first cruise was on the 400 PAX 15,000 ton Enchanted Capri and the second was 2100 PAX 70,000 ton Carnival Inspiration. I could tell a huge difference ! I spent several years thinking small is better until I sailed on the HAL Oosterdam. I thought I would be lost in the crowd on the bigger ships, but not so. Right now, I think I like the mega biggies quit well !

I prefer the bigger ships~more room to move, more to do~and Carnival's Conquest class is without a doubt my favorite.

But like many others, put me on a boat and I'm happy, regardless of the size

My two pennies say that its not the size that counts but whether the ship is old or new. Build a new ship that is Fantasy class and it will get a lot of passengers trying it out. In 7 or 8 years the Conquest class ships will seem ancient and eventually they will be sailing the less traveled routes on less than 7 day trips...So as the saying goes .. Size doesnt matter.

We too prefer the Spirit class Carnival ships, or most any ship between 70,00 and 100,00 tons. IMO the Spirit class ships are perfect. Big enough to have lots of activities, and small enough to be easy to navigate around, and with a limited amount of people aboard. Just returned from "Miracle", sailed "Legend two months ago, and have another "Legend" cruise booked next year. (For what it's worth, we also love the 5-A cabins on Spirit class)

Yes you are right, pretty much the older the ship is, it will do the shorter cruises.

Yes, I like bigger ships, or smaller ones, and I never have seen one too big
As for the ride, I have been on Holiday, Navigator of the Seas, and a couple more in between. When the sea is smooth, they are all smooth; when it is rough, they all have motions, but Holiday's are short, high-frequency motions whereas Navigator has big, slow motions. Different people are bothered by different kinds of motion, but neither bothers me, even though those big swoops on the Navigator did give me some embarrassing moments
No, DW, I did not sit in that stranger's lap intentionally.

Kat..don't hold your breath waiting for it to come to the west coast..ask Santa for a plane ticket to come to Florida to try her out

considering that the OAS is not even in service yet, i think folks should give her a try then make a decision
