Default Is there a chance of upgrading?

It's been a long time since I have cruised on Carnvial and I know a few years ago if you arrived fairly early to check in, you might have a chance of maybe having your cabin updgraded.

Do they still do that

No. All upgrading is done before the sail date. So i you are upgraded they will let you know.

I guess I am one of the unlucky ones, as I have never received a free upgrade in almost 25 years of sailing. I have receievd free upgrades at the time of booking just like many other passengers. The problem now days is that many ships sail full or nearly so. If you inquire at the purser's desk you might be able to get an upgrade however you will no doubt have to pay additional charges which , if you are going up several grades, will be very costly.

I have my first guarantee cabin booked for Jan 4, 09 and I didn't get an upgrade to a higher cabin. Just my like some schmuck who spent HALF of what I spent (as a solo cruiser I pay double) for a oceanview would get upgraded to a high deck balcony or better a suite....10 days out and I haven't heard anything bout me getting upgraded. Alas, I have a balcony cabin close the action, so I am relatively happy....I doubt the logo gift shop (port side) gets wild late into the night.....

I have booked two cruises when they had cabin upgrade sales, so on those two occasions I did save some money....

Perhaps I'll be suprised at the port and be given a Cat 11 or 12 suite!!!! This is a dream, but dreams can come true...

Virtually every ship sails full every time, so there is almost no chance for an upgrade once you get to the ship. Your best bet for an upgrade is to call a week or two before sailing to see what is available at that time.

On my recent Carnival cruise, the suites were going for $900 & change per person (8-day cruise) three weeks prior to sailing. THAT was a good deal.

Yes $900 for a suite for 8 days is a great deal. That is pretty much what a balcony is for 8 days.

Back in 2004 we had booked a Ocean View room and our kids had a Interior room directly across from us. We even had room numbers. When we got to the dock we found out that our room numbers had been changed. As soon as we got on the ship we went straight to the pursers desk to complain. Not knowing much about cruising at that time we just didn't think that it was right for them to change our rooms without asking our permission or even telling us. The lady at the pursers desk just smiled at us and I remember saying to my wife "she thinks this is funny". She then asked us if we really knew what was happening. Little did we know that we had been upgraded to a Balcony room and our kids were in the room next to us. The kids room had an obstructed view but ours was perfect. At that point all I could say was thank you very much.
