Default Help! ASAP

We leave next Sat. on the Splendor. I am hearing nothing but bad, I am petrified! have read that because of a thin hull she is very rocky. Also everyone has pretty much said say away from DR. but tht is a stop that I have already booked excusions. Some have said the people on the island don't want you there. This stuff came from a Carnival Web site. Can anyone shed some light on this new ship. Can I get my money back on an excursion that is already paid for.

What excursion did you book in the DR? I would recommend the Cayo Levantado excursion it is wonderful. I actually honeymooned in this area 11 years ago. I happen to like the resort we stayed at which is right across the water from Cayo Levantado.
The island is very nice and you will have no problems there.

I believe you can cancel an excursion up to 24 hours beforehand...Sometimes, you can't take ship reviews too serious, you may read another one that is totally the oposite, so take them all with a grain of salt and form your own opinion. Go with a more positive mind and I bet you have a great time.

Relax mom. If you go in with that fearful attitude you're almost guaranteed to have a bad experience. Every little thing will bother you because you are expecting problems. Think positive and have fun.

Like others have said, don't pay much attention to negative talk.
Those who have nothing but bad to say about a cruise ship generally are full of hot air ! They don't have a clue !
My guess is you will totally love this ship. It's new !!!
As for fear of a port of call, by booking a shore tour though the company you have ensure the safest visit. I've been to some tough places as ports of call, but was never in any danger. By being part of a ship's tour you will usually only see the parts that the country's tourism office wishes you to see.....clean, safe, friendly.
I think you will enjoy your visit there as well ! 8)
As for exchanging tour tickets, one can indeed do so. I did that last year for a cheaper tour and my account was credited with the difference.
All is cool 8)

I wouldn't worry about it. The newer the ships I have been on, have been less rocky. So the Splendor is very new so you should be fine. Also it has the newest technology on it, so that should help.

I have been on this same trip on the Splendor and had a great time.
All I can tell you is your fears are completely without merit.
The Splendor is an excellent ship with no structural problems and the people in the DR will not cook and eat you. Chill Out!!

Hey Dave, just booked a cruise aboard the Crown Princess with 2 cruise friends of mine. Some really good deals out there and they upgraded me to a really nice huge balcony. Have you ever done Princess? Bob

Bob,

we did the crown princess in 2007. She's a beautiful ship, you'll love your balcony room and food like you wouldn't believe!!! All upscale food. Sushi on the buffet a couple of nights. Captains dinner hubby and I went upstairs to buffet and I thought I died and went to seafood heaven - king crab, lobster claws, steamed littlenecks, steamed mussels, yummy! My only beef with her is that the theatre seats are tight, and by tight I mean narrow walkways between you --wind up stepping on each other to get to a seat because it is so tight. To get a drink is next to impossible for employees to reach you as well and the little table top that comes down to rest a drink on is actually tight to your body. Now I'm not a size 2 but I'm not a size 20 and up either. If you got a good deal on her go you won't be disappointed. We took her out of Brooklyn and I have NEVER EVER been boarded so efficiently and quickly. Can also say that about the disembarking as well.

Default THE SHIP IS BEAUTIFUL

I just got off the splendor yesterday from Ft. Lauderdale and the cruise was as smooth as it gets. I can honestly say that there was not a negative comment I can say about this ship. BUT on the otherhand the DR was horrible. I would not go there again. My brother in law went there and said it was beautiful but he did not go where we went as he went by plane somewhere else on the island. It was dirty, disgusting and if you went the wrong way almost fearful!! All in all I did have a lot of fun on this ship and would recommend it to anyone!!!

There are some areas of the Dominican Republic that are very "third world" it is after all a very poor country frequently wrought with natural disasters. That is not to say that beauty cannot be found there. The Cayo Levantado excursion is nice. There are some very beautiful coral reefs if you care to scuba dive. There are some very nice and safe resorts in this area, some offer day passes. I would not EVER write off the entire country or even this port due to the poverty and filth seen in certain areas. It does mean however, that you need to really do your homework and research when selecting how you will spend your day while visiting this port.

Hondaprelude36 did you have a plan or book an excursion for this port or were you just winging it? Most ports you can get off and just walk around and see the sights, and you end up having a fine time with minimal effort in planning. I would say that I would not do that in Samana. I would do a thorough job really checking out all of my options and invest some time in choosing.

Beenie Weenie,

You mention day passses. We are looking to choose a hotel on St Lucia to spend the day as we have two small children and the more adventurous trips are just not suitable. In fact we have had a lot of trouble working out what to do on some stops. We are going on Carnival Victory in three weeks round Southern Carribean. Plus you seem to have lots of cruise exp - any tips for St Kitts? Can you taxi the port to a beach?

Thanks Nicky

Thank you all! My family would agree Chill Out! But I also agree that anywhere you go you need to play it safe. Go in groups. My sister and I are going on the horseback riding excursion with Carnival that should be ok.

You know I have never been to St. Kitts before. I am scheduled to stop there in October on our NCL Jewel cruise and since we too travel with our kids, I know I will probably be looking for something pretty low key.

One of the people on our roll call who had been there before recommended a guide name Ilva Wallace. Someone also recommended a place called Turtle Beach. You might google both of those and see if you come up with any good ideas that appeal to you.

Hope that helps!

Hi Beenie Weenie, I will keep you posted on the St Kitts research as I have Turtle Beach noted down from research on this site. I think Donna posted last year about it saying you could get a 45 minute taxi ride there.

Any St Lucia tips on the hotel day passes?

Thanks Nicky

In St. Lucia you can go to the Windjammer Resort. They really don't require a daypass, they just like you to eat and/or drink during your visit there.

I have heard at one time Sandals offered a day pass.

I was in St Kitts when I was on the Dawn Princess, we got a tour from a local that took us to a private beach to do a little snorkling and much to my surprise we were eating lobster on the beach and drinking Red Stripes for $10 each. It was totally awesome.
