Default Tendering at Grand Cayman

I've been trying to save some money by figuring out what activities I can plan on my own rather than book expensive excursions through Carnival but I'm not sure how it works to get back to your ship if it is tendered. Obviously in other ports the ship is easily accessible at any time. Are there multiple scheduled trips back and forth to the ship during the day? If the chances of me getting left behind are greater, then a excursion might be the way to go.

You'll be fine, there will be tenders running continuously. GC is one of those ports that are sometimes missed due to sea conditions, but nice never the less. Just get a cab where you want to go or book an independent tour if you like.

When we were in Grand Cayman in August we did a tour when we got on shore with a private tour and they had us back in plenty of time. The tenders run all day.

We were in Grand Cayman in December. They have opened a new tender dock that seems to support more ships now. There were 5 anchored in port while we were there. The old dock is still there and was taking tenders from one of the Royal Caribbean ships. Looking from the ship the old docks are to the right of the new docks just past the new freight docks.

We shopped for a while then tendered back to the ship for lunch and to get beach gear. The lines were short and the wait was not bad at all. After mid day the tour operators all but disappeared from the port area but we were able to catch a taxi to 7 mile beach right out side the gate. Just less that $10 each if I remember right. Early in the day the signs held up said $20 but the price got cheaper until the cabs themselves outside the gate were around $10. The water felt cold so we only stayed on the beach about 1 hour. Again plenty of taxis available. Another $10 each to come back.

Lines were getting long by the time we wanted to go back. About a 30 minute wait. We were on board in plenty of time though. There were 2 people they kept paging for over the ships speaker then about 30 minutes after the scheduled time to leave a tender came from the dock with 2 people on it. As soon as they were on the ship powered up and move out. I assumed they would have been left if they took too much longer but the ship does seem to give a little buffer.

Remember that this island is the one island that you can never take for granted you will step foot on, due to the seas. A couple of times we could not port, and onece we ported on the other side of the island, and took a bus over to the shopping district....this was a first for us. When we tendered back, we hit a reef, and when they pulled up the tender, boy there was a hole!!

So just be prepared, that even with good weather, as we had, rough seas will prevent anyone tendering..just too dangerous.

I enjoyed the window shopping here...pricey but beautiful. Have fun!

Grand Cayman is one of those ports where they WILL wait for you. I have never heard of a person being left behind because of their own ineptitude. There are circumstances where you can be left behind like you become a guest of Her Majesty in one of their lovely rooms with bars to get in and out or you have a medical reason and you just can't get back to the ship on time or you are not fit to go back.

Sea conditions mean you might miss a port, but there is also a South tender landing on the South end of the island and it can be used if there are one or two ships in port. It is NOT close to any shopping and a $5 cab ride to the center of George Town...

Have fun!!!

Very true, but a fact the cruise lines don't want you to know.

When you couldn't port, where did you end up going? Then what happens about shore excursions? Obviously the ones you have lined up for Cayman is done for but what about the new port?

We just ported on the other side of the island, and took the buses provided for us to Georgetown. Nice ride, and it looked like South Florida.

We had no excursions, but the time difference was really minimal, and I am sure the excursion opeartors, at least for those booked by the ship were alerted.

We will be going on our 4th cruise in February. This will be our third time to Grand Cayman. We haven't had any problems with the weather and tendering, is there a certain time of year that the weather plays a factor in tendering?I love GC and would hate to miss it. We always cruise in either January or February.
Thanks

We went different times of the year and never had a problem. I need bilateral knee replacements and found it easy to get off and on the tendering boats. Maybe we were just lucky. Going again in June 2009 we will see what that month is like to get off and on.
