Default Dinner Dress Requirements and Practice

First time on Carnival. Been on a bunch of other lines. 7 night Valor. What are the dress requirements and what do people do? I'd rather not pack a suit, sport coat and tux. To tell you the truth I'd like to not dress formal but will if I really to. Thanks.

http://www.carnival.com/CMS/FAQs/Din...uirements.aspx
From Carnival's website:
Cruise Casual Dining Dress Code: Gentlemen - Sport slacks, khakis, jeans (no cut-offs), dress shorts (long), collared sport shirts; Ladies - Casual dresses, casual skirts or pants and blouses, summer dresses, Capri pants, dress shorts, jeans (no cut-offs). Not permitted in the dining room during the Cruise Casual dinner for ladies and gentlemen: gym shorts, basketball shorts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, cut-off jeans, and sleeveless shirts for men.

Cruise Elegant Dining Dress Code:
Gentlemen - Dress slacks, dress shirts. We also suggest a sport coat. If you wish to wear suits and ties or tuxedos, by all means we invite you to do so. Ladies - Cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirts and blouses; if you‘d like to show off your evening gowns, that's great too! Not permitted in the dining room during the Cruise Elegant dinner for ladies and gentlemen: shorts, T-shirts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, jeans, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men, sportswear, and baseball hats.

in laymans terms you can wear jeans and a polo shirt most nights and on the dress up nights you can do slacks and a dress shirt, tie or no tie it wont matter but a lot of men will wear a sport coat and tie..

And you don't have to dress up at all if you choose to eat at the buffet.

I was told by our waiter on the Miracle that tank tops, teeshirts and sandles were not allowed at dinner. I wore nice shorts every night because I hate to get dressed up on vacation. We saw people in gowns and tuxs the same nights I wore shorts

Thanks for the responses. Looks like it's more casual than Princess and Celibrity

Cutiecat: How did the Valor compare to the other CCL ships you have been on as well as the RCL?

First I do recommend taking a coat for the two formal nights. A tie is nice also, but you will not necessarily need a suit or tux. Pack one coat + one tie and you will fit in/ blend in. There is a huge ongoing debate concerning jeans, but from my experiences...DON'T . All shirts after 5pm in public areas should have collars.
I was on the Valor in 2007 and she's pretty much similar to the other "fun ships". She has a bit more polish with bells & whistles than the Inspiration and Destiny.

The Valor is the most beautiful ship I've ever been on, second comes Royal's Brilliance of the Seas.

I liked the Brilliance as she was beautiful, I met some great people, we had decent service on her, and I will sail Royal again; but Carnival still gets my vote hands down.

Everything about the Valor I loved. Her decor, her lighting and flooring, her layout. I had not one thing to complain about. At that time she was the biggest ship I had been on and she blew me away~so different than the Imagination and the Holiday.

Her layout is nearly identical to the Destiny and above class ships, but a bit bigger.

Here's some pics from my trip~
Atrium ceiling and flooring

Promenade Deck King Boulevard

Lido Deck Rest. Rosie's

Lido Deck. I took this and thought it turned out absolutely gorgeous...it's still one of my favorite shots I have ever taken on a ship

Hope you enjoy

Those pictures are awesome! A few years back we were booked on her but missed out because of a hurricane. dld, I wouldn't worry about the coat too much. You definitely won't be the only one if you don't wear it

I agree ! That atrium photo must have been with a specially wide angle lens. My lens is 35mm to 80mm & I attempted a photo that very same Valor Atrium and best I could do was get PART of it.

Is that a Carnival requirement, or your own personal preference? (I assume you're talking about areas other than just the main dining room).

not really a requirement, but more of a guideline. Carnival recommends it. people tend to dress up for dinner and stay that way after 5, so nice shirts/pants/outfits are what you'll see more often. to my knowledge it is not required though.

Not a guideline either.Carnival recommends it only for the dining room, not public areas after 5pm.To the OP,Only time you will have to wear any kind of formal wear are Cruise Elegant nights in the dining room.Otherwise casaul is fine and many people change to it after dinner. On my past 3 cruises when they had Cruise Elegant night I seen very few still all dressed up after dinner outside of the dining room.Just a few observations from a frequent Carnival cruiser.

I like to go back to my cabin after dinner and change back into something more comfortable also. Not keen on getting dressed up but will do it for the dining room.

Look I can't speak for everybody. Just my observations which aren't always that great. In the dining room and show lounge after 5pm people tend to dress nice. Can't speak for the casino crowd.
Dress how you want...I don't care !!

Thank you.

And yes, Carnival has been known to recommend it. I have many a Caper that suggests "no shorts or resort wear after 5 p.m. in public areas." I didn't say they had to dress up. I said nice.

Could you possibly post a photo of one of those Carnival capers? That would at least show folks something concrete -- that it's originating from Carnival, and not from one person's own personal preferences.

The way I read the 2009 Carnival Cruise Vacations book is that in the evening shirts in the public areas should be collared.
"For dining, you may want to dress up a bit and/or bring along a light sports jacket or cardigan......"
"Most evenings we have a Cruise Casual dress code, but there are those Cruise Elegant evenings one or two nights throughout your 'Fun ship' voyage where you will have the opportunity to showcase your more elegant attire. For those who want casual attire for dinner time, the Seaview Bistro on the Lido Deck is open nightly and has a more relaxed theme. Both dress codes for the dining rooms are described below.
CRUISE CASUAL: Gentlemen.... Sports slacks, khakis, jeans ( no cut offs), dress shorts ( long), COLLARED sports shirts, ......
Not permitted in the dining room during cruise Casual dinner for ladies and gentlemen : gym shorts, basketball shorts, beach flip flops, bathing suit attire, cut-off jeans, and sleeveless shirts for men"
CRUISE ELEGANT: " gentlemen-dress slacks, dress shirts. We also suggest a sports coat. If you wish to wear suits and ties or tuxedos, by all means we invite you to do so".
I take it they are euphemistically saying that while they can't force you to dress up a bit, that they in fact expect you to dress nicely for public areas...formal dining rooms, show theater, lounges, piano bar, disco, atrium, and so on.
Looking at Carnival's books and DVD, I see a clue as to what the line expects Guest are shown in T-shirts & shorts while around the pool or on shore excursions. But all photos in the evenings are of people dressed up a little bit, with the men wearing trousers and shirts with collars.

YEP ! That seems to be Carnival's position the way I read it in the "Cruise Vacations" brochure.
"....For those who want casual attire for dinner time, the Seaview Bistro on the Lido Deck is open nightly and has a more relaxed theme. "
Which means that if someone doesn't like dress up nights= eat on the Lido . 8)

I don't really agree that you have to eat at the Lido buffet if you don't want to get dressed up. I have seen many people on "formal" night who are merely dressed in something nicer than jeans and a t-shirt. I like getting dressed up, since I don't get many chances to do so at home, but Carnival tends to have a very relaxed attitude about the dress code. Even their publications use words like "suggestion" or "you may want to dress up", etc.
Personally, I don't care how other people dress. But, you should be fine in a nice pair of slacks and a collared shirt.

Here is what I take from all of this. At the very least I will wear slacks and a nice collered shirt. Proabaly can get away with a nice golf shirt but a short sleeve or long sleeve sport shirt is probably better. Sport coat without tie works well and I can absolutley get away with no tie. As far as going to the Lido if you don't wear a tie or jacket--I do not agree. You can. Carnival's policy resulted from the practice and sounds like a nice compromise.
