Travel Planning & Packing Checklist Template

I have a spreadsheet that I now use as a combined planning & packing checklist. If you want me to send you a copy of my spreadsheet so you can edit and add to it for yourself, PM me with your email address.

The column headings are:

Category (Planning Checklist, Packing Checklist/Michelle, Packing Checklist/Ian)

Sub-category (carry-on, suitcase, clothes/tops, clothes/bottoms, clothes/footwear, totebag, neck organizer, etc.)

Description (skinny jeans, red tank top, black sneakers, etc.)

Take it - I put an x in this cell if I'm taking it on this trip

Get it - I put an x in this cell if this is something I have to purchase

Do It - I put an x in this cell if this is something I have to do (a "planning checklist" item)

Done/Packed - I put an x in this cell once the to do item is done or the packing item has been packed.

This is great as you can sort by a column to plan your trip. For example, when you check to see what planning things you have to do, sort by "do it" and then you can see what things (book rental car, book excursions, etc.) you need to do for this trip but didn't to yet.

When you getr closer to the trip and want to marck off which specific clothing items you want to bring based on the weather and travel location, you sort by Description.

If you want me to send you a copy of my spreadsheet so you can edit and add to it for yourself, PM me with your email address.

You can basically complete a "Template" of all things you might need to do or bring along for any type of trip, then as each trip comes up you copy it, rename it and edit it to be specific for that trip.

You can also have a sub-category for specific types of trips. For example, I hae one called "just for cruises" where something will only be checked off if they appl to a cruise (complete cruiseline online registration, plastic S&S holder, expired gift card for cabin safe, etc.).

Happy Cruising!

They are very handy. My D/G uses one and it proved to be useful when here pocketbook was stolen in Vegas. We did lose our new digital camera but all of her ID and credit cards were safe and sound around her neck.

Hi, I just emailed it to you. And yes, I'm in the north/northwest suburbs of Chicago.

Hi Jennifer, and Welcome to Cruisemates! Unfortunately, Michelle hasn't posted since August of 2010 :(.

I'd suggest you write a new post asking for a list of "must haves" :) for cruising!

I hope that someone will post Michelle's checklist for you, but I can't find it any more :(!

Sure made me look foolish. I wondered why I didn't get a response. Now I know. Teach me to follow the crowd like a lemming! :-)

Not at all, Thom! All of us have done the very same thing. It's really not that hard to make your own list and everyone has different "must haves". For instance, we like our own insulated cups and a travel pillow and my Kindle. A lot of people could do without all three and have a wonderful time ;).

I keep a Word Doc and I make adjustments depending on where we're going (Alaska, Caribbean :D).

I'd suggest you start with the simple stuff: underwear, socks, T's, shorts, collared shirt's, slacks, RX, bathroom stuff, etc., and then add the "extra's", like my cup and pillow. I also put the "things to do before we leave", on my list.

We've really cut down on what we take since our first cruise. We re-wear things that aren't really dirty (for instance, I'll put on a clean top and a skirt for dinner, then wear the top the next day with shorts) and we do a load of laundry if needed. Everyone, remember: other people really don't notice what you're wearing unless it's outrageous!

I only bring 5 pairs of shoe's: one pair of white deck shoes, one pair of walking shoes, one pair of casual sandels, one pair of flip-flops, and a pair of dress sandels. (Shoe's are the heaviest things in your luggage.)

Good luck with your list :D,

littlepockit May 11th, 2011 10:28 AM

hello!

whereas our upcoming trip on the fantasy will be our first carnival cruise with our children, i have cruised before. besides the obvious items to pack (pants, shirts, shoes), the 5 must haves for our family are as follows:

-a large cup (ours are those bright colored cheap tumblers from walmart-usually a $1 or 2 for a pack of four).

-small container of some sort of laundry/mild soap to wash out small items in bathroom sink. laundromat type room is available but its crazy expensive.

-batteries (AA, AAA, whatever your camera needs...bring more than you think you would ever need).

-e-reader device (we have kindle).

-ziploc baggies.

if you have kids:

-small amount of entertainment for the children (a couple toys, coloring books, etc).

hope that helps. i thought about not putting any explanation or reasoning for items, but if did that, i sounded kind of like some sort of macguyver and/or deviant bent on corrupting the young. i assure you, i do not corrupt the young. rofl
