Default Open seating for dinner??

Has anyone experienced open seating for dinner on CCL?
I was wondering how does it work? they have certain tables set aside for folks to wonder in and out? Do you still see the dancing waiters? I love getting up and dancing with them...

Hey I just got back from the Carnival Legend and we had open seating. It is actually really nice as your never rushed to get to the dining room. The one thing is if it is busy you get like a pager and they page you when a table is open. Also you can choose to eat with a large group or just with whoever you are with. Like my family of three went so we could get a table for three or we could eat with another family or whatever. The dancing waiters are still there and as good as always!

I had the option of Open Dining on the Liberty when I booked for Oct. 31, 2009, but since it is my first cruise I opted for late dining so I could absorb the experiences of my tablemates and get to know them better(kinda hoping I meet a single hot shorty on board). You know, friends and guides in a way.

Ya that is for sure a nice thing about main or late dining is that you get to know the people you are with. With the open dining you could be with somebody new every night so it really just depends on what fits with you the best.

Okay, the first cruise, we had a large table but our tablemates only showed up once....
The second cruise... we loved our tablemates and even met up with two of them after our cruise....
But this time, since it was offered I thought we'd give it a shot. I like the sound of not having to be there at a specific time. 8) 8) 8)

Sure, I hope it works for you. Tablemates not showing has been a problem for me in the past. Sometimes I get a group that shows up every night. Other times I'm asigned tablemates who prefer the Lido, pizza, or room service.

Briguy, the tablemates can be the ones from hell, but then so can we. Of course, if your at a table with me you wouldn't want to piss me off or you may wind up seeing fire errupt from the floor. I am the devil I tell you, the devil. Ha Ha Ha(Laughs in a sarcastic tone).

I honestly wish we had that on the last cruise.... Tablemates that were sooo much older and first time cruisers... We requested a change and were put a table that seated 6 and we were the only ones... so with the mediocre food (but great service) we opted out. Would have went if we could have picked a table.

Our first table was 3 couples and one couple the man ordered 2 "rusty Nails" the other couple ordered 2 pink somethings. Started talking about how much MORE they were spending on the cruise.... why wasn't everything included and were "shocked" when the drinks arrived and their S&S cards were asked for.... you can guess... "What do you mean we have to pay for the drinks... it's all you can eat and drink!"
We ended up excusing ourselves to use the mens/laides and did not go back.

Sounds to me like they were previously on an all inclusive cruise. People need to make sure they understand what is included when they book. Unfortunately, there are some unscrupulous travel agents out there more concerned with making a commission than actually serving the needs of their clients by explaining all the details and giving good advice. If people book directly through the cruise line they should know enough or have enough experience to know what they are getting into. I am a cruise virgin, but was able to book directly with full understanding since I am also a travel student.

My two cents: I have to say it's good, bad, and ugly. On our recent cruise, in December, we had a very rude older woman at our table. It was embarrasing how she treated the waitstaff. My husband could tell I was just going to walk out. He knew. I just don't want any negativity on vacation, or for that matter, anywhere.
We have met wonderful people, as well. You just never know. I like to reserve a table for two usually, so I don't have to deal with it. It's fun meeting people up at the bar, or other places, and we've done that. Plus, there it's easier to walk away, if necessary.

When people are rude to the servers, it is often because they look down on them. These are not necessarily people who would have servants at home either, but often times people who are in the mindset that these people are servants to be abused. Generally, the people who have servants in every day life treat them very well. I know a friend of mine treats the few she employs very well.
