Are the selections for us karaokers any good in the karaoke bars? I typically like to sing R&B(old school and new), but can pretty much sing anything. I am just wondering how the selection of songs is.

I will warn you right now...the selection is no where near as extensive as a regular Karaoke Bar.
I have sung on most of the Carnival ships and while some are better than others...none are great.
If you are on the Inspiration, Imagination or Splendor....you will be dealing with the Ethermedia Digital System. It is a great system for the hosts because they don't have to pull CDs....but the selection is the WORST.
As for the other ships that have the CAVS system....it truly depends on the Karaoke Hosts that particular ship has had in the past.
Some hosts are really determined to keep the books up to date and as well stocked as possible....but sadly MOST are simply sitting in that chair until a Social Host position opens up.....
Some people (like me) have written Carnival for permission to bring my own. In general, Carnival isn't crazy about folks using their own....but most hosts will not object IF you just keep quiet about it and understand that you are accepting all responsibility should your CDG get damaged.
Of course, if you are sailing one of the ships with the Ethermedia systems...you are stuck with their awful selection because they don't use CDGs.

lhp is absolutely correct. Some ships offer a MUCH better selection, and books than others. I've even been aboard ships where there was only ONE BOOK available, and that was it! To reiterate, it usually depends on the karaoke host/hostess, as some really do a good job of keeping the books, and equipment in good condition, and updated, and others simply sit in the chair. To be fair, most of them are very good, and are a lot of fun. I always pack my favorite CDG disks, and 9 times out of 10 they let me use them.
Carnival Freedom had the worst selection of Karaoke out of all my Carnival cruises. The host also couldn't figure out how to get the sound right. So for some people the music was way to soft. My cruise was April to May 08 so maybe it's better now.

I don't think I've ever done Liberty, but with any luck you'll have a great karaoke host, and a super selection.
Just did "Triumph" and they did something that I've never seen on a Carnival ship. They had karaoke in the afternoons at the stage in the casino, as well as the regular karaoke at night. We had a GREAT time singing there, and a lot of people who would have never gone to regular karaoke got involved. I hope other ships start doing that as well, as it was really a hit!

Just looked, and I did sail "Liberty" in April of '07. As I recall, they had a pretty good selection at that time, but it's been a while! Good luck.
I used to go to karaoke bars and found that some of the singers had amazing talent. There was this one guy I knew that sounded like Marilyn Manson, a girl that sounded lie Amy Lee(from Evanescence) and this one girl I knew who had the chops to be able to put out her own album and not sound like anyone else. Unfortunately, the fraternities eventually took over our spot. Either way, this time I would actually like to be able to sing and remember the words.
Sing karaoke and you might get into the legends show. I sang something, put a little heart into it and the host asked me to do Elton John. I didnt have to audition or anything. Of course the rest of the week I was frazzled trying to learn the song but in the end it was great. For some reason I dont like people who bring their own music. It seems to me they are showing off.

The other singers better just hope they don't have a contest on board. I would have an unfair advantage. Part of my main career(acting) is singing. Profession performer here. What is this deal with the talent contest they have on the ships?

Ken: This brings up the question...when are we going to cruise together so that we can sing some duets (with your wife, fiance', girlfriend or significant other's permission...of course)!!

The passenger talent show is a show, NOT a competition. You have to sign up and audition, so check your daily paper (Capers) for where and when to do that. Some are so bad you cringe, others are really quite good. I was on one cruise when all but one were professionals with heavy cred's...and the one was a little old lady doing the hula. Quite cute, really.

I, of course, would hope I was the best there. Of course, if I was the best even among professionals, that would be something. Oh, wait a minute, I am a professional aren't I? Or at the very least semi-professional. For the record, all performances are competitions in one way or another. Nature of show business.

I'd love to cruise, and sing with you! The lovely Mrs. Jones (Vita) wouldn't care at all, as she doesn't sing and is accustomed to me singing, and doing the "Legends Show" or talent show. She sits in the audience and cheers me on. I'm sure we'll get on the same ship eventually.....

Oh, by the way,,,,I did indeed compete in a talent CONTEST aboard the RCI Mariner of the Seas. A retired professional Elvis impersonator won, but he was extremely good, and deserved to win. He didn't admit that he was a pro until after he won though.....

Please thank Mrs. Vita for her willingness to share....
She sounds like my hubby...he pops into karaoke from time to time but mainly goes to the shows are listens to the solo entertainers around the ship.
I have read the RCCL use to put the winner's name in the hat for a free cruise. That would be neat.....
