is it better to take the tours sold on the ship( TRIUMPH 31MAY 09) or is it better to get a trip at the pier. We want to go to ATLANTIS and see the sights and other t attractions but not sure of the different cost.I understand you can get a water taxi or a cab

We are doing Atlantis next week through Carnival. Will be sailing on the Conquest. Will let you know if it was worth it. Also have booked the Kayak & nature experience in Freeport.

Depends on how long you are docked in Nassau.

If you are on one of the ships with 8-12 hours in port, I would NEVER book an excursion through the ship.

Too easy to get any of them a few hundred feet down the pier at the Welcome Center for half price....

Can't help you out with Atlantis, as we did it by cab our first trip to Nassau and I doubt we'll ever go back.
Too expensive and just not worth it. ($12 for a tiny bowl of Mac and Cheese?!?!?!?!)

Did the Aquarium for free.
It was interesting, but if you have been to any halfway decent aquarium in the US, (Baltimore, Atlanta, etc..) the only decent thing in there was the Manta Ray.
I would pissed to pay the $29.95 they charge for that during the day.

Was intersting to walk through the Galleria and Casino and see the shiny marble and statues, etc... but we had a much better time exploring Nassau itself the next 2 times we stopped there.

I've been to Nassau twice and did the Atlantis both times. I went with different people each time. I loved the Atlantis. It is pricey but I thought the aquarium was very beautifully done although the idea of it being the lost island of Atlantis is a little overdone. But then it is supposed to be Atlantis. The decor is gorgeous. Every detail is beautiful. The blown glass sculptures in the hotel and casino are exquisite. If you are into art and architectural detail you will enjoy it.
The first time I went it was with three other women and we ran around all over the place and ate lunch out in the huge palapa in the center of the lagoon. The food was excellent. It cost more than usual but we decided we were worth it. The second time I went it was with my DH and a friend. They did not seem to enjoy it as much as I did and gave up early. We didn't make it to the lunch area. It was rather hot and muggy that day.
We bought the trip through the ship walked to the end of the pier and caught the water taxi. We took a regular taxi back as our friend was not up to walking back to the pier. It isn't that far but it was hot. I don't remember now if the water taxi was included in our tickets or if the water taxi is free.
In looking at the shore excursions on the Carnival site I see that there are now several different venues you can do at the Atlantis, all pricey. Whole beach days with and without lunch, dolphin experiences and others including just going to the hotel and doing the tour through the hotel and aquarium.
For my DH and me we always book through the cruiseline. We like knowing that if something happens to our transportation when we are a long way from the ship they will wait on us. Not that on Nassau there would be that problem. Other people don't seem to worry about it and haven't had any trouble. In another regard about booking through the cruiseline or getting something on the pier I tend to think that any tour company offering tours through the cruiseline would want to make sure that their vehicles and the actual experience was up to certain standards. We were in one town where we saw a local group taking off on ATVs and I was appalled at the condition of the ATVs. Since I've been twice and am not into sitting on beaches in the sun or doing dolphin encounters I imagine if I go again I will do a tour of the island in some way. But for a first time I would do the Atlantis. You can probably find out on the internet some pricing in Nassau for a trip to the Atlantis.
If you go out to the Atlantis and do the tour, even doing lunch, you can still be back in town and have time to do something else.

Default Stayed at Atlantis and done cruise tour

Stayed at Atlantis before for 4 days, if you can find a tour that gives you access to the waterslides and attractions it is well worth it.. The waterslides are amazing. The first time we saw atlantis was on a cruise and the tours were limited, the aquariums are pretty cool... maybe that has changed.. will have some pics of my cruise that stopped at Atlantis soon at link below..
