None:

Skeet shooting was eliminated on all major cruise lines a long time ago. Concerns over littering the ocean and firearms led to its demise.

Take care,
Mike

Mike's right. It used to be a lot of fun shooting skeet off the stern of the big ships, but it's been quite a while since they'd arm the passengers with a shotgun. Just another casualty of the 9/11 hijackers. Guess we'll just have to slide down the water slide instead.

No more driving golf balls off the stern either - don't want to litter.

The skeet shooting was eliminated way before 9/11. My understanding was that it was a "pollution" issue. like the golf balls. It has been illegal for some time to throw anything overboard...by passenger or the ship. I think we have gone a tad too far. Clay pidgeons are biodegradable and they used to grind up leftover food and feed the fish with it. Now, they have to stow it and dump it on land. That makes no sense to me. But, a lot of things don't, so this is just another entry on the list!

I think the problem was the broken clay pigeons were harming birds

Lead shot was part of the problem. Also the plastic "cup" inside the shell which seperates the shot from powder.

With all the news about piracy going on in the world it might not be a bad idea to have a few weapons on board.

Could you imagine how much money the pirates could make off with if they nabbed a cruise ship with 3000 people on board? How much money is in the Casino, and most people carry several hundred dollars cash with them when they cruise.

A good article that cruise mates could do is "How ready are the cruise lines to handle pirates" It would be interesting to know if a cruise ship could defend itself or not from a pirate invasion.

This is diverging quite a bit from the original post, but ...

There have bee some successful hijack attempts over the years, mostly in the Indian Ocean of yachts and very small ships. I think there was an attempt on Oceania Nautica late last year transiting The Gulf of Aden. I know some ships put in (maybe) at Dubai and off loaded all pax, and passed through the danger zone with crew only, them re-embarked the pax closer to the Suez Canal.

Here's the story on Nautica from the Cruise Mates News Archive:

Damn. I always wanted to eat some skeet for dinner that I caught myself

There is also the famous Achille Lauro hijacking.
