LAX is yucky, go Long Beach if you can get a direct flight. You want to stay near the terminal, it's nice down there. I have heard bad things about the Queen Mary, but lots of nice hotels there. Long Beach is Carnival only terminal all others go out of San Pedro. If you drive you can stay out near Sunset, Huntington Beach area on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCD) you will be walking distance from the beach. If you don't drive we like the Supershuttle. The shuttled us from Sacramento airport to home. Bring a cell phone if you need to call them for any reason. I did a fare quote from Long Beach airport to Queen Mary (it's where the cruise terminal is) shared ride is first $18.00 additional guest $8;
Exclusive Van $74 additional guest 0; and ExecuCar Sedan Service $57.00 additional guest $0.00. Here is a link to the fare quote page. http://www.supershuttle.com/FareQuote.aspx

We are planning on Splendor in October. Flying into Long Beach the night before and our of LAX post cruise. (We can get home about 2.5 hours earlier flying from LAX.) A Carnival transfer to/from LAX is 26 pp. I understand a taxi is about $80. It doesn't look like Carnival provides transfers to Long Beach airport which is why you probably they are directing you to LAX. I think Orange County (SNA) isn't too far away, especially if you do pre-cruise in Huntington Beach like Katlady suggests.
