What do you put in your carry on bag

Ok, not to sound stupid but...what do you put in your carry on bag for the ship? I'm trying to finish my packing today!

CA Cruiser April 22nd, 2009 02:20 PM

We have all our valuables; camera, binoculars, jewelry, medicines, 12 pk soda and water, and DH'S dockers for dinner. Some ppl have their swimsuits in their too. We arrive around 10:30am and usually get on by noon for lunch. Our main luggage has always been delivered and unpacked by drill time. Have a great time. Only 4 weeks and 4 days left till our cruise!!

colorcrazie April 22nd, 2009 02:37 PM

All of the above, plus a disposable poncho. Yes, you can go inside if it rains while you are on the ship, but I don't want to!
Oh, and a book, because I am a readaholic.

i've never actually put a swimsuit or change of clothes...well maybe the 1st cruise....but i forget.

generally it's the camera, meds, laptop, something to read, bottle of water, maybe a couple snacks and that's it.

cutiecat April 22nd, 2009 03:30 PM

camera, docs, notebook, throw blanket, book to read, pen, my expensive jewelry (i don't take a lot but what i do take i do not want in my checked luggage), tylenol...that's about it :)

Kentucky Cruiser April 22nd, 2009 04:07 PM

All above, especially a change of clothes (shorts or capri). My 1st cruise I left from cold climate. I about melted by the time we got our luggage. Also pack a smile & a positive attitude because yuou are going to have a GREAT time!!

Akelli April 22nd, 2009 04:19 PM

Great information!! Can I put my cokes and water in luggage to be checked? Also, we are each taking a bottle of wine. Should that go in checked luggage or carry on?

GaryI April 22nd, 2009 04:41 PM

We always put our Cokes & water in the checked luggage. It gets way too heavy to lug around until you get to your cabin. I would just put the wine in your luggage. If you are flying in put it in at the port. You can also carry it on. Just remember it will be awhile before you get to your cabin.

Enjoy your cruise.

We consolidate down to one smallish roller bag. A shoulder bag works too, but the roller bag is really easy to handle, especially in the lunch buffet line. We have a change of clothes, all electronics, meds, and jewelry. Not that we take much with us, but anything we may need for the evening, or don’t want to take a chance on losing goes in our carry on. Used to take on swim wear but haven’t needed it on the first day so we don’t bother with it.

We fly in the night before and stay in a hotel. We have plenty of time to adjust our carry on from what we would have packed for the flight. Otherwise we would likely take on both our carry ons from the flght.

Trip April 22nd, 2009 07:14 PM

Meds.... jewelry...makeup, camera...book....inflatable pillow for the plane, and a small blanket...

Since I have to fly to cruise (I live in the Chicago area), I only travel with one carry-on bag plus a large shoulderbag, I put everything into my carry-on. Clothes (I do laundry halfway through the trip), travel size toiletries (I buy any other items that are too big for the 3 oz air restrictions upon arrivel in my port city), electrinic stuff, ext cord, power strip, travel docs, etc.

If you want a copy of my template spreadsheet containing a planning checklist, packing checklist, itinerary, wardrobe planner, and a tab listing many travel planning & packing checklist websites, send me a PM and include your email address!

I'm currently planning for a trip to my mom's (Miami area) over Thanksgiving and also have columns set up for my march 2010 cruise oin Imagination. Went to my mom's in March over spring break and my list was invaluable!

I usually pack clothes for dinner, don't really care to eat in the clothes I traveled in all day, unless I was fortunate to come in a day early...Any meds also go in a carry-on bag along with all the travel docs and anything of value that is never in the checked luggage. I now have to put the make-up, shampoo, etc. in the checked luggage because of the restrictions for flying.

In most cases, the checked luggage has arrived before dinner, but you just never know.

In the airport it has to go in your suitcase. In the port you may be able to get it on the boat in your carry on *maybe*.

Nothin but blue skies April 29th, 2009 05:27 PM

We always put the wine in our carry-one, 1 bottle per passenger.
I include (like everyone else) all meds, camera, charges, phone, docs, basic cosmetics and jewelry. Basically anything that I need the first few hours and anything that can't be replaced on the ship.

If we are driving in to the port, I don't worry about packing a change of clothes, but if we are flying in there seems to be a larger chance of luggage being lost/delayed and I pack one change of clothing. I will sometimes, just pack a fresh shirt or a shawl or light sweater for dinner in case the luggage is not in the cabin before dinner. It usually is in our cabin before the life boat drill.

If the carryon is a little larger/heavier by all means use a rolling bag. If not, a nice shoulder bag or back pack is sufficient.

IBCRUZIN' April 30th, 2009 11:51 AM

I put 1 1/2 days' worth of clothes in my carry on. Luggages is sometimes sluggish getting to your cabin and has been know to get lost.

This way my cruise can start as soon as I get into my cabin. I have a change of clothes to enjoy the sailaway, I have my 1st night's dinner wear, I have an outfit for breakfast, my swimsuit and usually one more daytime outfit.

I have read on these boards of people's first half of their cruise ruined b/c their luggage was lost and how they had no clothes to change into, blah, blah, blah.

I actually carry a 21 inch pilot luggage on the ship with me that has everything I will need for a few days. Just in case.

For my last cruise on 4/18 I packed this stuff in my carry-on.

1. One pair of pants
2. One polo shirt
3. One pair of socks
4. One pair of underwear
5. Laptop and AC adapter
4. Cell phone charger
5. Camera including USB cable and battery charger
6. Medications in the daily dose container and injectables
7. Travel Wallet: Extra credit card, other cards, air and cruise documents
8. Toothbrush
9. In plastic bag: Travel size toothpaste, eye drops, shaving cream (easy to pull out at airport security.)
10. Extra dress watch
11. Swimsuit
12. Compact binoculars

I found a Samsonite laptop carry-on that is one of the best I've seen. Multiple sections to separate different "things" and make it easy to pull out the laptop and get it back in at the airport without requiring opening the main compartment. Also separate section for meds and the plastic bag of liquids. This also makes it easy to locate, pull out and put back in at the airport scanner.

Take care,
Mike
