Nurse, sorry to come across as snippy with you. I appreciate the nuturing and protective nature that lead you to choose your profession. Under stating the hazzards can lead to problems, as can over emphasising the negative. I am a buyer for one of the countries largest distributors of industrial protective equipment and medical supplies. There is now a shortage of surgical masks, respirators of all types including those paper dust masks you can pick up at Wal Mart. That shortage is now including hand sanitizer. There are clinics and EMT services that are now having difficulty in securing these items. So over stating the negative possibilities can in itself cause negative effects.
From a personal point of view, I leave on a cruise 5-3. In the month of April a storm hit my roof, my 3 yr old car suffered catastrophic engine failure, and I developed, and recovered from a staph infection. So I need a vacation. The reported effects from this flu outbreak whether real or over stated have impacted me on that level as well. The effects of this flu don't scare me too much at this point. So I might be a little touchy

seriously, i dont want to spread bad karma...that was never my intention, truley i just want everyone safe as possible.

Its just my personal opinion that states i wouldnt cruise, but believe me or not, i had this ever so fleating thought about "hey if the school closes, i bet i could get in a cheap cruise"...i swear to God, i it crossed my mind lol. I'm as big a sucker for cruising as the rest of you, and i LOVE Cozumel.

We will still plan on going in Jan. And if i had a cruise planned, i'd probably have to go because my husband would badger me to death about it until i relented.

Id hate ANYONE to not cruise because of this thing, i know how much we all plan plan plan and get excited. Most of us plan these things a year out!

I do just hope everyone keeps a close eye on what happens in the next month, as that will tell us what we are really looking at. I DO NOT believe this is some killer flu from hell, but i do believe that a lot of people are going to get sick, and yes, some will die, the only thing that makes this a bigger killer is the lack of any form whatsoever of any immunity to it. This is what my main stance has been all along. Not that "omg were all gonna die from Captain Tripps!"...no not at all, this will be the "omg im sick in bed for a week or two feeling like dog crap achy fevery ick" that we all have to deal with each winter...however, since there is no vaccine, or common immunity from just being exposed every few years to a certain strain, more people have the POTENTIAL to contract it much more easily than the normal run of the mill bugs we see and have seen for eons. That is my point, so just BE CAREFUL OUT THERE, and for once use that hand gel we all pack in our bags but forget to use during the cruise And if you do get sick on your cruise or start feeling fluish, than be safe for others and hunker down in your cabin. A ship is a relativly small environment for so many thousands of people...so again, just be ultra careful, but you cant hide, you cant run, but you CAN be safe as possible!

If you do have a nice Dr, get him to give you some antivirals to take with you...just incase.

I'll stop posting, i really didnt mean to make it seem like im one of those wierdos with sandwich signs in N. Y. ringing a bell yelling "the world is coming to an end"! I just want us all to be safe, happy and healthy!

God Bless!

I, for one, am grateful for your input, nurseypoo.
We deal with flu viruses all the time and thus tend to think that it isn't that big a deal. But, this one could be. I'm not saying that it will, only that it could be. And, those who refuse to accept that and take reasonable precautions are most likely to learn that lesson the hard way. It doesn't take away from anything to take basic precautions, like hand washing. And I truly don't think that the media is over-hyping this, although they often do. When the head of the World Health Organization goes public with a level 5 warning, that is NOT hype, it is fact.
Okay, going to go take my vit C now.

Some GOOD NEWS....

this strain is missing the genetic markers that were in the 1918 strain.

Yes the CDC (media and everyone else) is over-reacting.

BUT.... we MUST over-react NOW to stop it from becoming a SUPER BUG.

(caps for emphasis...not shouting)

The CDC is over-reacting to stop further MUTATIONS.

This strain may be weak and that is good news....but if it is not handled properly....it is the next mutated strain that we have to worry about.

AND it is a strain (mild or not) that CAN mutate to birds....and if that happens...containment will not be an option.

I know I am immune to swine flu, by virtue of having only very short, very sporadic with other people. I have little to no human contact, so unless it becomes airborne I am unlikely to catch it.

I'm happy to hear you don't have swine flu. I caught Montezuma's revenge several years ago after spending a week in Mexico on vacation. We flew down to Acapulco. It was a miserable trip home. At least on a ship you can suffer in your cabin with the bathroom nearby. I don't know how the Swine flu could be much worse.
As soon as you are sufficiently recovered would you please write what you thought of Holiday? Thanks.

thanks for the well wishes. 8) I have submitted my review.....

" On 25 April 2009 I sailed on the Carnival Holiday out of Mobile, AL. This was my 9th cruise and 5th “Fun Ship” vacation. The objective was to sail on this older class of vessel before they are completely replaced. There are those who claim that this ship is a frumpy rust bucket and seem eager to see her leave the fleet in November. That assessment is largely incorrect based my experience traveling on her. For the most part the ship has been maintained in a lovely condition and doesn’t look her age.
Embarkation in Mobile could not have been more efficient. I arrived at the car park at 1200 and was on the ship 20 minutes later. The Mobile staff was absolutely fabulous in showing good old fashioned Southern hospitality. The city is very proud to have a ship to call its own, and that showed. Finding the ship from I-10 was easy enough, however I do recommend a more prominent “turn here” sign at exit 26A.
Debarkation was very much the same story….fast & polite.
Southern hospitality seems to carry over onto the ship itself. Being relatively small compared to the newer “Fun Ships,” the Holiday posses a small town atmosphere. Clearly a passenger is a name, not simply a number.
Being a relatively smaller has both advantages as well as disadvantages. Everything is close walking distance, meaning that getting from one’s cabin to the dining room then on to the show lounge is never overwhelming. Getting lost isn’t the problem that it is on the mega-ships. Another advantage is the camaraderie of passengers and personal attention given by the staff. Out of 9 cruises, I would rate Tory as my favorite cruise director. Her 3 social hosts were most personable in making time to befriend guest.
The 2 production shows were to most everyone’s likening. The first show presenting primarily a rock n’ roll theme. The second was totally country western which catered appropriately to a Southern US clientele. The grand finality was a touching version of Lee Greenwood’s “proud to be an American”. Everyone took to their feet in enthusiasm.
The food, as always, was very much to my liking. Continuity is a Carnival strength and the menu is no different. The warm melted chocolate cake is offered every night fleet wide.
The most noticeable disadvantage to being only 46,000 tons is the relatively rough ride. She traveled a bumpy road…at least on my sailing she did. Unfortunately I had an aft/stern cabin where I felt the engines, wenches, and other commotions. Stay way clear of Upper deck aft staterooms! A minor issue is the poor sightlines in the Americana Theater. Get there early if you prefer a good view.
All things considered, it will be sad to see this vestige of Carnival’s past sail out of the fleet. "

Nurseypoo...

I don't mind you giving your opinion or your expertise. I think everyone needs to have an infromed opinion about this. Of course things are changing on a daily basis so what one comes to believe or feel today could change tomorrow.

Still, my point is that it should be up to the individual whether or not they want to cruise there. There is nothing stopping anyone from booking a hotel in Cancun right now, but whether or not you want to is another story.

I suspect that if prices drop low enough plenty of people will go.

I hope the curise lines feel it is safe enough to go back to Mexico soon, and if some people do not want to go then they shouldn't.

What I am hopoing does not happen is that an uninformed public who has barely ever left their backyard doesn't freak out when cruise lines start going back there and start a newspaper campaign to stop us.

Thanks for the review. I expected that it wouldn't be as bad as our TA said she'd heard it was.
Do you know what they are replacing her with?
On the issue of Swine Flu, do people realize that had we not known about it we would also not be hearing about everyone who comes down with anything that even resembles the flu. We do not ordinarily hear about who's getting sick all over the world. I wish they would confirm first then report.
My husband said that if we end up in Mexico on our trip May 14 that he was going to voluntarily, as a safety gesture of course, quarantine himself for several days at home instead of going to work after the cruise to make sure he didn't pass any virus along to his co-workers. He's a saint.

Boy, taking all those days off to relax at home, just for the benefit of his fellow workers. And his employers can't complain. I love it.

no, the Holiday is a fine ship under ideal conditions. We had high winds and a flu scare.....both beyond the captain's command.
The Fantasy will be coming over from New Orleans as the Triumph moves in. Both Mobile and New Orleans get newer, bigger, fancier ships. Everybody wins ! 8)
I had to quarantine myself too, but not willingly. I caught a very bad respiratory infection. My hometown doctor prescribed some potent cough syrup which has spaced me out

Beginning agent, and I am working on opening my business currently. I really do not have to go out much, and when I do I have very limited contact with other people. I am simply trying to keep a positive outlook. My cruise is not until October so I do have the benefit of knowing a vaccine should be available by then if there is a problem at the time.

Well My Splendor cruise for the 31st along the Mexican Riviera is now to Oregon and Canada, Ugh! I really had hoped for my first cruise (and honeymoon) to be riddled with beaches, snorkeling, and checking out Mazatlan and other coastal cities in Mexico. I guess now I'll have to spend the time aboard the ship spending our extra $200 OBC and exploring the casinos, shows, and spa. Disappointed with the premature decision to change routes, since H1N1 is just about everywhere now, and a lot can change in 27 days. I was really ticked but Im getting over it. I will still have fun just not in shorts and a tank top!
Oh, since there's cruises leaving Seattle for Alaska, Im wondering why Carnival chose Canada? Is it that much further from Long Beach to Alaska? Just figured if its going to most likely not hit above 60 during this cruise, may as well go for the gusto and do Alaska!
Still excited, just wish it was still Mexico!
