Default Dumb question about smoking on ship

Ok, now I'm sure that I am going to get flamed for this...

I just came back from my first trip, and I have to say, I didn't expect the ever present smell of cigarette smoke. Other than getting a port call cancelled (yeah, I'm still upset about that), the only thing I had a problem with on the ship was the overwhelming odor of cigarette smoke.

Yes, the dining rooms were non-smoking (thank God!), but I couldn't enjoy the pool area, where it seemed that every table and every other chair had a cigarette, and I couldn't visit any of the lounges without smelling like an ashtray. When waiting for our dinner seating, we had to wait in line next to a lounge that just absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke. VERY strong odor.

I haven't experienced anything like that in 20 years.

In general, I enjoyed my cruise... But the cigarette smoke seemed overwhelming....

Question: Is it this way on all cruise ships, or was it just the poor design of the Holiday? Or is it the generational skewing of the passengers (many, many, senior citizens from the south, who seemed to be smoking the most).

It is better on the larger ships. It's also better than it was just a few years ago. There should have been a smoking side and nonsmoking side on the pool deck. Most smokers follow the rules if they are aware of them.

On some of the ships, there is a cigar bar near the dining rooms so this may have been the case with the Holiday. The Holiday is also the oldest fleet in the Carnival fleet, if I am not wrong.

While larger ships do seem to handle it better....it is still the luck of the draw (no pun intended) on how big a smoking crowd is on board.

We have sailed on most of the Carnival ships and the Fantasy class (coming to Mobile next) unfortunately probably will not be much better from what you described on the Holiday.

Simply because of their open design, the smoke is hard to contain.
Even on the Conquest class, the lounge areas (disco, cover band, piano bar, casino etc) are the designated smoking areas. So there will always be smoke in there.

No flames about this. It is a concern and unfortunately it is a difficult situation to resolve.

For years I have been campaigning Carnival to build "smarter ships" instead of bigger ones. I know the technology is out there.

My example is: There is a nail salon (inside the store) at the very entrance of our Walmart. Anyone who has worn those fake nails knows that stuff stinks to high heaven. This nail salon has an open front (those huge sliding doors that they close when the salon is closed). But when salon is open...those huge doors are open. There is absolutely nothing to stop the smell. However, there is no smell.

So I inquired. Before Walmart would let them move in...they had to install some kind of monster filtration system.

If there is a system out there that will handle sculptured nail aroma.... then there is a system that will handle smoke.

One bit of good news is that the Splendor (currently in California) does not allow smoking on the Lido (where the pool is). It has a retractable roof....so it is considered (technically) an inside space. The Splendor is also currently the only Carnival ship with nonsmoking cabins. Spa cabins do not allow smoking inside OR on their balconies.

Just FYI, there are cruise lines that are more restrictive. Oceania is probably the most restrictive with Celebrity coming in second.

Oceania has good reason to be restrictive. As a luxury line they would naturally want to keep their ships in excellent shape.

okay first of all let me say that I am an ex smoker so I my sense of smell is more keen than most when it comes to cig smoke. I will also say that I have never liked to be around other ppl smoking even when I was a smoker but now it is much more noticeable to me.
We were on Carnival Miracle two years ago and I have to say except for casino and bars, I really didn't notice it.

I'm unfamiliar with the Holiday... but certainly all the newer, larger CArnival ships have several bars and lounges that are designated NON smoking.
The Atrium area is also designated non smoking.

If you enjoyed the other things about the cruise, check out each ship's smoking policies before booking.

Same here, I use to smoke and I didn't notice it on either of our cruises...
Unless someone directly in front of us was smoking.... we'd hold our breath and zip past them... lol

Sorry about your bad experience. It mostly depends on the population of your specific cruise. Some are worse than others are but it varies based on who happens to be on the cruise. To me I notice more of it on the ship than in “real life” because more people are packed closer together for a longer period of time. When they go outside to smoke, they go the same place where everyone else is. Still I have not been overly assaulted by smoking on the cruises I’ve been on.

Most open decks have smoking and non-smoking sides. You may need to look around for the signs. Most people are general good about following the rules if they are pointed out as long a you don’t sit down by someone already smoking then start complaining. (I’ve seen it happen, more than once). Even then, most will try to conform.
