We have decided to rent motor scooters when we dock in Key West. Does anyone here have any experience with renting scooters there? I would like to know if I should reserve them online or will there be plenty available when we get there.

When I was there for New Years Eve, I noticed scooter rental places everywhere. I dont think you will have a problem renting one.
We were thereon may 2 09 as stated previously there are rental agencies everywhere. There were 2 ships in port, Carnival Valor and Carnival Holiday, and there seemed to be many scooters available for rent. I would wait until I arrived in port rather than reserve one.

My comment is unless you ride scooters at home regularly why would you get on one in a huge vacation area? I would NEVER rent one... rent the 2 seater and save a trip to the hospital... I guess it is better in Key West than overseas (NEVER there) but as stated unless you are used to a scooter stick to 4 wheels.

Thanks Bob. That is good advice. Actually, we are a motorcycle riding family. My youngest who is now eleven years old raced motocross at the age of eight. Besides that I think the minimum age to ride/rent is eighteen.
Thanks to all for their help.

Good point. I would also add that if you are used to a scooter, don't take the 2-seater, especially if it is of the 3-wheel variety [as some are]. They handle differently than either a car or a two-wheeler. If you do rent a 3-wheeler, just take care and try some maneuvers in the parking lot before you hit the street.

Your quite welcome... We have seen scooter wrecks in Cozumel, Grand Cayman and the Bahamas... none very nice. Many years ago I lived on St. Thomas and worked on St. John's.... people who rented scooters were called many things dumb things by us who lived and drove... and you do drive on the left in the Virgin Islands... the hospital called them organ donors.
You would be one of a handful that actually knew what you were doing... now the big problem would be the rest of the idiots on vacation with you... lol

co-cruisers of mine rented one on our recent Destiny cruise. Unfortunately they wiped out with minor injuries through no fault of the scooter company. My only recommendation and this is because one of the party was much lighter in weight than the other: if you have never driven a motorcycle or snowmobiled together and are renting just one scooter, talk to someone who has. I have never ridden a motorcycle but I did snowmobile with my husband years ago and what one does the other has to do too, i.e. lean to the right, lean to the left, etc. There is a lot of traffic in Key West and the roads are narrow if you're going to use the scooters to tour around. Please be careful.
