Default A warning about Island Tours in Cozumel

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up...

after 10+ years of going to Cozumel without a care in the world...there is a group that belongs to the taxi union called Island Tours.

Their vans have this name on the side of their vans...and they overcharge. They also get paid (as much as $10 a head) to bring tourist to a particular beach. They even lie about other beach resorts to do this.

So just beware...

make sure you don't get in a van that has Island Tours on the side.

Just to be very specific...the problem we have experienced was with their vans that pick up "cold calls" at the pier in the taxi line.

I can not speak to any excursions that they do....so I don't want to imply that their excursions are involved.

I think a lot of companies use similar names like "Tours" and "Island"...this is specifically addressed to the Vans with "island tours" that are picking up taxi fares at the pier.

So booking an excursion on line may be fine.

Also do be aware that there is a Tour Cozumel who has been booking all inclusives to Mr. Sanchos. One of the owners name is Carrie. She takes the money and does not pay Mr. Sanchos...so Mr. Sanchos is not honoring those reservations.

Of course, the people have not seen any refunds from Carrie......

so just be aware.

We used Cozumel-tours and they were excellent, so don't get them confused with this bad rap.....

With the note regarding the caveat on the tours vs the taxi service....
Some bits of info found with a search reveals:

http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberre...?EntryID=51252

Cozumel, Mexico - I booked the Passion Island tour ($65/person) through TourCozumel as it came very highly recommended by CC members on the Ports of Call board.
There was a minor mix-up in communications between myself and organizer, Carrie. The tour ended up being cancelled but I didn't find out until after we arrived home. Not a huge deal, we ended up going shopping downtown instead.
Carrie was able to give me a refund for my deposit, but not before she sent me a very harsh and unprofessional email after reading my mini-review on the Ports of Call board.
I know many CC members have had great success with the company but I just wanted to let people know about my personal experience. I didn't know the company's cancellation policy. Things didn't go according to plan and that's okay. It happens. It was simply a mix-up in communication but the rude way that she dealt with it left a very negative impression with me. I would personally not choose to use this company again.

We booked through tourcozumel who promised us a refund if the ship didn't stop. DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT book through tourcozumel. See the long thread going on this.

http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/...Off0458602.htm
Tour Cozumel - Carrie Fanton - Ken Fanton took our money and then when the ship did not stop due to swine flu they refuse to refund....
We booked an all inclusive beach day with tour cozumel for may 1st 2009. We were to arrive by cruise ship that day. Due to the swine flu outbreak our ship did not stop in cozumel. In fact all cruise lines and stops were cancelled to all ports in mexico. When we returned home on May 4th I sent an email to the company requesting a refund. I rcvd a return email from Carrie advising me to send her my email address (the one we used thru paypal) and she would issue the refund. Well it is now a month later and we have not received any refund. I have tried to email and contact this company several other times since and they will not even respond to my emails.

So it looks like there is something to folks concerns with this company.

You can get a taxi over there for about $15 - takes 15 minutes.
All inclusive food/drinks day there is around $50.
They have a website but I don't see a way to make a reservation.
It's a beach club with restaurant/ bar.

We went to Playa Mia in April. We got off the boat and went with a group of people on our own with what I think was Island Tours, the same company they are talking about !!

He charged us $25 per person, transportation to and from, we could stay as long as we wanted, and we had use of everything, but included no food (but we could buy it if we wanted).

The pool was small, but it was still a nice beach. They had the water trampoline, ice burg to climb on (which were both pretty far out in the water), paddle boats, canoes, lounge chairs, etc. I was disappointed that the water wasn't as clear and blue as I had expected, but that didn't matter, my kids had a really good time.

You got them on a good day....for this excursion...they have been hitting people up for as much as $40 a person.

You did not say how many people involved...I was trying to "do the math".

Round trip to Playa is $30.00 ROUND TRIP for up to 4 people. Playa charges an $8 (used to be...could be $10 by now) Entrance fee.

If if you had 4 people....(even at $10 per person to get it)...this trip would have cost you 30 (taxi fare) + 40 (to get in) = $70.00.

What I like about Paradise Beach is that they offer all this and more...BUT there is no entrance fee....so the $10 per person is OPTIONAL ....only those who want to play on the water toys pay it. The boys always get it...hubby and I do not.

No, you do not need a reservation.

They offer an all inclusive OR ala carte for people who don't drink that much.

We used to go there all the time before Paradise Beach opened up.

Good food and drinks...all safe.

Mr Sanchos has nothing to do with this Carrie and Ken mess. They are caught in the middle. They can not honor a reservation that Carrie and Ken have not paid for.

Tell Francisco that Linda said HI!!

Thanls for bring this up. You are correct.

Folks were having problems with Carrie and Ken BEFORE the Swine Flu.

They were showing up at Mr. Sanchos with their reservations in hand...but since Carrie and Ken had not sent Mr. S. the money...these reservations were being denied.

This couple tried to pull the same thing at Paradise Beach. The only difference is that Tom did honor the reservations (even though he had not been paid) and he "got the money" out of Ken and Carrie.

When Ken and Carrie saw that Tom wasn't going to allow them to scam others.....they moved on to Mr. Sanchos and even went so far as to go on various boards under fake names to slam Paradise Beach.

In this case, it is Americans that are causing problems in paradise.....

As long as folks simply use the regular taxis..... white with a red stripe...they will be fine.

As usual, 95% are honest hardworking folks.... but you always have that 5%....
