Default Things to do in Calica

Can anyone tell me what is there to do Calica? We are doing the beach in Coz and are interested in shopping in Calica. In doing research, it doesn't seem like there is much shopping there. So has anyone ever grabbed a Taxi to Playa Del Carmen? Any ideas would be helpful.

Calica is a gravel pit. Seriously.. We grabbed a cab and went to XCaret for part of the day. It's a beautiful eco park where you can play in the water and swim with the dolphins. After that we caught another cab $10 to Playa Del Carmen. Thats where your shopping is and its a great little town to hang out in.

Thanks that is so helpful!!! Is the cab $10 per person? And how far of a ride is it?

I would also vote for XCaret... but if shopping is your only goal, I'd head to Cancun by taxi.

I honestly can't remember if it was per person but seemed fairly cheap. The cab ride from the ship to XCaret was 15 minutes. And another 15 minutes from there to Playa Del Carmen. On the way back from Playa Del Carmen it only took about 20 minutes or so. Very quick and easy.

How far is Cancun?
About 50 miles farther than Playa Del Carmen, and posted opinions indicate that Cancun is more "Americanized" that Playa. Playa has a Sam's club, so how "American" must Cancun be?

Unlike most Mexican cities, Cancun was developed to be a tourist attraction. Might give you an idea of how Americanized it is! :o Lots of hotels and restaraunts. That's about it. Not a bad place for a land vacation, but I wouldn't bother going there for anything else.

contact the omni hotel for puerto aventura via the internet - send them an e-mail - we were able to get a day pass in May 2006 for $25pp which included lunch, towels and a drink. There swim up bar was nice. The beach sand is like flour, they have a pool and your can snorkel. The water was gorgeous. Puerto Aventura appears to be a small enclave. You can shop. I believe this is where the dolphin show is too. Just take a taxi when you get to Calica. Unless things have changed, the area where the ship is docked is basically a drop off point, then you pick up a taxi. The taxi is quite cheap.
