Default How to pack?

Ok, I know what I'm taking on our 5-day cruise that leaves in 2 weeks. I'm such a list person- it's not funny! I just don't know how to take it. How much luggage do people typically use? We're driving to our port. So, I don't need to be as restrictive as I would be if we were flying to our destination. However, I don't want to go nuts here!

I'm thinking about taking a large rolling suitcase for clothes + shoes, a carry-on for toiletries (whatever else that may fit) and a backpack for electronics...

Does that sound about right??

Whatever you carry on to the ship, be sure everythign you will want for a few hours or so is in the bag. YOur luggage won't arrive at your stateroom for a couple hours after boarding. You'll probably want to make sure you camera, sunscreen, bathing suit etc...are handy for the afternoon on deck.

Otherwise, sounds like you're on the right track. I waaaay over pack everytime so I won't even attempt any further advice.

Have a ton of fun!

Default great idea

I didn't even think about the fact that we won't see our luggage for a few hours!

Thanks so much!

Only carry on the items you will need before bed time the first night. Dinner is informal so maybe a clean shirt or anything that will make you comfortable. Carry on all your valuable or fragile items and all your medications. A camera may be fun too, especially for the sail away party.

It you arrived before noon, keep your carry on light because your room won’t be ready until about 1:00. The Lido buffet will be open as soon as boarding is allowed, so it’s not too tough to stow a roller bag at the table while having lunch or drag it around while checking out the ship and passing time until your room is ready. Shampoo and body wash are included in the room so not too many toiletries need to be carried on.

If you board after 1:00, feel free to carry on as much as you can comfortably control on the escalators and in the halls.

Your checked bags should arrive at your room before bed time. If you have space in your carry on, you could pack a contingency change of clothes and night clothes in the rare case where a bag gets lost. About 2 dozen will end up down by the pursuers desk because the tags get torn off. If you don’t have one of your bags by the time dinner ends, check there to see if it is in the pile.

For the list person in you: (in order of importance, which of course will change for each person you ask)
1.) Travel docs, credit cards. Keep them with you for check in.
2.) Valuables, money, jewelry. Don’t leave them in the checked bags.
3.) Travel insurance policy
4.) Medications
5.) Fragile items (cameras, cell phones, dvd players, etc)
6.) Sun Screen
7.) Tooth brush and tooth paste
8.) Swim suit (?)
9.) Change of light clothes for dinner (?) (resort casual)
10) If you are cold natured, a sweater (?) for the dinning and show rooms
11) Expensive makeup or any that you just can’t go to dinner without. (?)
12) Worst case: Night Clothes, change for 2nd day, (shouldn’t be needed). (?)

Default Thanks!

I had all of that on my packing list, just not "carry on" list.

Thank you so much for your suggestions!

We leave in 2 weeks! I can't wait!

Take care

Default What to pack

I brought a small "steamer" with me since you can't bring an iron.
Also a few bottles of water that I refilled.

I would add a disposable rain poncho in your carryon, just in case. I take a couple in our checked bags and always have one in my port bag.
Have fun!

I do all my cruises with just a roller carry on. Lay out everything you'll think you'll need, then put half of it back. I don't know your cruise but if you have a lot of sea days, you need less clothes. Those days are spent in a swim suit and shorts. You'll only need dinner clothes. There no law saying you have to wear 5 new outfits every day. hahahaha Mix and match your dinner clothes.

You will have a fantastic time. Please give us a review when you get back.

Default thank you

Thank you for your helpful tips!

We'll be gone a total of 5 days- 2 on land, 3 at sea.

I think you're right about laying everything out. I have 2 weeks from today to do that!!!

Take care

I'm terrible. I start packing two weeks ahead of time and realize I just put too much stuff out. Oh yeah.. a little travel clock is nice and pack a night light and extension cord. There's only one outlet in the cabin and they are not always in the most convient spot. This way you can plug in your electronics/ hair dryer etc..

The carrying bag is a great idea. Thanks for that. All I had in mind before I read this was a small body bag for things like passports, credit cards, camera etc.

Now, does the Carnival provide hairdryers in the cabins? I was thinking of only bringing the straighteners.

Some ships have hair dryers. Almost all of the new ships and most of the recently remodeled do. Carnival usually uses older ships on the 5 day runs. Which ship will you be on? Maybe someone has sailed her and can remember if they have hair dryers.

I cant add much to what has already been said other than you may have to get you through your first nights dinner with what you carry on....worst case.

There should be an outlet in the bathroom for a shaver up high for the nightlight. Big plus.

Ikea makes/sells a nice small power strip with three outlets and a three outlet head and a short pig tail thats ideal for cruising.

A generic over the door shoe organizer for the bathroom door keeps things organized in the cramped confines of a cruise cabin.

Have fun.

As Dina says - pick out your clothes you think you will need, THEN - put half of it back ! Works every time.

Default Packing

The reply you got from Dina is in my opinion right on target. We can now take a 38 day cruise with one suit case and one travel on bag each. We find much of the "stuff" just isn't used or needed. Have a great cruise>

also, if you're going to a hot climate, pack white shorts, pants and a long white skirt. Then, just bring a few camisoles, t-shirts, tank tops and a few other shirts. Anything goes with white! make them clothes that you can wash, wring out in the sink, hang to dry and have them dry by the next day. Test things at home to see how fast they dry. Ok, wear a black or other dress just for formal night. But try staying with one primary color for bottoms and lots of colorful tops to alternate with them. This not only makes for light packing but also means you just pull out any top and don't have to spend time worrying about what matches.

for my March 2010 4 nighter oin Imagination, I'm bringing a long white peasant skirt, white shorts, 3 camisoles to wear with the skirt for dinner, 4 tank tops to wear with the shorts during the day, 4 nice long tank tops to wear with the pants wear. a long blue halter dress for formal night. white sandals for all evenings. dr school comfy sandals for the day time. 1 swim suit. lingerie for 2 days, will wash every night. that's it.
