We just got back from Nassau and all we wanted to do was enjoy the beach and do a little shopping.
You do not need to book an excursion to go to the beach. There are a lot of taxi drivers that will be waiting when you get off the ship to take you where you want to go.
I recommend Cabbage Beach. It will cost you $4.00 per person to get there and the same to get back. You can rent an umbrella for $20.00 and lounge chairs for $10.00. There are vendors selling water and other drinks as well.
Shopping is right there where you get off the ship at the end of the pier.

On our very first cruise that stopped in Nassau, we booked an excursion thru Carnival to Blue Lagoon Island and enjoyed the day there, clean, beautiful water, hammocks, picnic tables, buffet lunch (at an additional cost), restrooms, etc.
