Default Newbie Question: Holiday

Hi, Liz and Joe here; we're first-time cruisers, sailing on the Carnival Holiday in Oct. '09; porting one day each at Cozumel and Calica (just across the strait).

We'd really like to travel to Xel-Ha/Tulum pueblo the first day (by ferry to Playa, then rental car) and stay overnight in Tulum after spending a whole day at Xel-Ha, so as to get an early start at the Tulum ruins the next morning.

Do you know if this is permissible under Carnival's requirements?
We'd meet up with the Holiday that next afternoon, at the port in Calica. (Otherwise, it's backtrack to Playa, take the ferry back to Cozumel, and back to Tulum the next morning when the ship docks in Calica.)

Obviously we'd inform the proper ship staff, so as not to come up missing!!
By the way, we're both well-seasoned local travelers, and I speak/read passable Spanish; we're just not cruisers! (But hope to be.)

Thanks for any help; this is a great resource.
Liz & Joe

Yes, It is possible since you are getting off and back on the ship, in a foreign country. As you said, it is very important that the ship knows not to expect you, or you could cause a delay for the ship.

Be sure to do your research on what what you would miss while off the ship.

Good Luck, and I hope it works out for you.

Default Overnighting ashore (Tulum)

Thanks, Luanne!
Who properly should be notified aboard ship? We want to be on the "up and up" with this plan. We'll really only miss one night aboard- sure hope it's not formal night; but that's usually at sea on a 5-day, right?

Anybody else have experience with staying on the mainland for one night? I would think the crew would frown on it; might complicate keeping track of cruisers!

I guess you would notify the purser. I am really not sure.

Who did you book with? Carnival or a TA?

Calling them might give you more advice.

Enjoy the Holiday! I was on her in April for my birthday. 8)
The staff were especially wonderful being a relatively smaller ship.

Default Newbie/Holiday

Thanks for the good word, Thoth! My daughter's birthday is April 25th.
As you probably have seen, there's been a few dire reviews of the Holiday. My husband Joe, being a 20 yr. vet of aircraft carriers, just had to chuckle. He's hoping for high seas!
If we fall in love, what will be the alternative from Mobile after this November?
Do you know any cool secrets or fave spots aboard ship- like for stargazing?
All the best,
liz & Joe from Milwaukee

Holiday will be replaced by Fantasy this November. Fantasy is considerably larger, but aside from the atrium, the layout is similar. Once you are familiar with one, you will find your way around the other with no trouble.
My favorite stargazing spot on the Holiday is the forward observation area on the veranda deck. Be quiet when walking down the veranda deck hallway, I have read comments that indicate a lot of people book the veranda suites for the quietness. There is a way to get there from one of the outer walkways, but I cannot describe it adequately. Perhaps you could look at the deck plans in the reviews section and find it. The area I am describing is on top of the bridge.

I wouldn't mine cruising on Holiday since it is the closest port to drive to, but the reviews really put me off, specially when they all complain about the rough ride. I am a fairweather sailor..... doesn't the ship have stabilizers?

I think the Holiday is kind of a clunker now. Its old and has a lot of miles on it. Its probably the reason its being pulled out of the fleet. You should still have fun but dont put too many expectations on the quality of the ship.

My birthday is 27 April, my sister is 24 and my niece is 25th. The last week of April is a great time for babies !! The Fantasy will be replacing the Holiday starting 10 November. It should be a step up for Mobile and I think those who enjoyed the Holiday will should easily like the Fantasy also.
Rough seas? To be honest the Holiday is a bit rougher than the newer/bigger ships in the fleet. Unless one is prone to motion sickness, then it shouldn't be a huge issue.
a word of advice...avoid a room Upper deck AFT since mine was very noisy. Unless they have fixed something, room U212 presented too much commotion with anchors and winches or something.
That said...She is better than all the grim reviews out there . She's clean...she's pretty..the food was great..the service was wonderful.
She's not a rust bucket. I didn't see any rust myself. 8)
Cool secrets? Humm..I would say that the two production shows were "can't miss". One was somewhat of a rock & roll theme and the second was a marvelous Country/Western show ( I'm not a huge Country music fan and I loved it).
If trivia games are one's taste then this is a great ship for games. I won two 100% genuine imitation gold ships on a stick and a bottle of champaign for my efforts.
Stargazing? I would say the AFT Lido pool area (deck 10) or the sports area on Veranda deck 11.
Good luck and have fun !!

Triumph is almost "Conquest" class. Not quite, but very, very similar. We sailed her in Feb. and had a GREAT time. I really, really enjoyed our "Triumph" cruise. You're very lucky to get her in N.O. Congrats!

Mobile is an upgrade, New Orleans gets an upgrade= Everybody wins !
Ultimatly the Dream replaces the Holiday in a roundabout way.
The Dream will sail the Glory's itineraries, the Glory will sail the Triumph's itineraies, the Triumph will take the Fantasy's place, and the Fantasy will take the Holiday's place.
a 130,000 ton 3,646 pax ship replaces a 46,000 ton 1,452 pax ship in the fleet.

New Orleans is still upset we lost the Conquest to Galveston

so Thoth, with that logic the Oasis of the Seas replaces any small town in America with a population of 5000

Newbie, don't worry about the Holiday! My wife and I went on our very first cruise in Bebruary 2008 and loved her. She is small, but the staff is wonderful! The ride was rough the first day, but we took some Bonnine to ward off motion sickness and didn't have a problem. I would sail on her again in a heartbeat. We aren't going to have the money to cruise this year, but hope to take the Fantasy out of Mobile next year. The terminal at Mobile is fantastic! The people there are really friendly.

Hurricane Katrina is why New Orleans lost the Conquest. It takes time my friend. The gulf coast area should be grateful for the Triumph meaning that I feel that the crescent city is back in business again 8)
Your right... Oasis of the Seas IS a small town of more than 5000. HUGE ship !

We sailed the Holiday back in Feb. She had some 'odor' issues but I understand that has been resolved. She was a charming smaller ship and crew was very nice. Mobile was actually one of the freindliest and easiest ports we've been in! I truly wish Mobile would get more ships/itineraries so I would be more inclined to go in/out of there rather than Ft L/Miami

Enjoy your trip!

We just sailed on the Holiday from July 18-23. The cruise director, Tory, ended every announcement with "Woo Hoo!"

We had some rougher sailing coming out of Cozumel..I don't get seasick really, but the rocking really scares me. Other than that, it was smooth as silk.

The Holiday is not being taken out of the fleet because she is old. She is being transferred to another company partially owned by the Carnival Corp. She will undergo a 4 month drydock and then start sailing in Spain as the Grand Holiday. This is the same thing that was done to the Celebration.

For the OP, you have to notify the Guest Services Desk (Purser's) of your intentions. They will probably try and talk you out of it. Technically you should have a Mexican Tourist Visa since you will be in the country greater than 24 hours since the Yucatan is not consider part of the tourist zones. But you should be able to get away with it with your S&S card if stopped by immigration.

Also keep in mind that there have been instances where the ship was not able to dock in Calica because of the weather. Do you have your passports in case you have to fly back to Mobile? The ship docks at around 7am which means you can get off at around 7:30am. You dont have to be back onboard until 4:30pm.
