Just came back a few days ago and I must say, I had the best time ever.

I really liked the Splendor, but there are some strange things about the ship, layout wise.

We loved the shows, I saw all of them. The Legends was my least favorite. I enjoyed one comedian, and not the second. The Quest was absolutely worth scoping out the Fun Times.

Food was great just about every day. The chocolate buffet was disappointing. We enjoyed our service in the dining room.

Our excursions all turned out great, both the ones booked independently and the ones through Carnival.

Let me know if anyone has any questions!

lovepea, glad you had a good time.

what else can you fill us in about Splendor? what about the layout did you not like? I have heard stories that it's kind of an odd layout from others.

thanks for any other info you can give :-D

About the layout, there were certain decks that you would think you should be able to go from one place to another, but you'd wind up at a dead-end. We took the stairs most times and even on the last days, we'd be staring at the closed doors to the dining room instead of being where we wanted...

The one key thing I'd say is that floor 5 is the key floor, and if you need to go from front to aft, you need to walk through the casino.

The cruise director was not my favorite, but hey, who cares.

What else would you like to know about the Splendor?

I really did like the ship and our room was great. We had an interior room with 4 people. 2 uppers and 2 lower beds and never felt claustrophobic or cramped. The lower beds were more comfy than the uppers.

The buffets were never too bad of a wait. The food was yummy in the dining room at dinner. The gym was very crowded the first day and progressively more empty each day.

What are you interested in knowing more about? I'd be happy to share more info.

Read your review...thanks for sharing. Yep...we were on the same ship. ;-)
No queue? Lucky you ! Since I flew in, I didn't have any control of arrival time. I had quit the wait while queued up.
For those driving in or flying in a day early, I do recommend ignoring that "don't come before 2pm" call ......do SHOW UP EARLY.

Cabo was way too quick. I wanted more time.

On the shows.....
"If you have small children, do not sit up front or they may see more than you might want them to. " SO true

I did the self debarkation and loved it. I didn't leave the ship until after 9.

It seems to be a fleet-wide issue. Yep those dining rooms are lost in the muddle. The aft Golden Pearl was on decks 3 & 4, but couldn't be accessed from decks 3 or 4 . I soon learned myself to go to deck 5 to get everywhere.

Thank you for the positive feedback on my review. I really enjoyed your review also. :-D I love the Sea of Cortez I wish they would either sub Mazatlan for La Paz or spend more time in Cabo San Lucas. I think HAL is the only cruise line to do cruises where all the ports are on the Sea of Cortez. I haven't cruised HAL before I'm a little worried it would be to slow a pace cruise line for me. I love the night life.;-)

Come to think of it, you do have a point about the Sea of Cortez. The ocean around Cabo was much nicer than it was around Puerto Vallarta or Mazatlan. They say the word Pacific means peaceful or pacified, but that ocean is anything but peaceful.
HAL on the sea of Cortez would likely be wonderful. It has been my experience that destination has a greater factor on a cruise experience and the people who sail, than does the ship.

I did do the 6 day on Carnival Elation that stopped at Cabo San Lucas and La Paz, both on the Sea of Cortez. Price is also a bad part of the HAL cruise. The 10 day Sea of Cortez on HAL is pretty pricey $899 for an inside cabin. I wish Carnival would do a version of it or just use some of these ports. Here are the ports on HAL's 10 Day Sea of Cortez:

San Diego, California,
Cabo San Lucas, Mexico;
Loreto, Mexico;
Guaymas, Mexico;
Topolobampo, Mexico;
Mazatlan, Mexico;
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Default For those that just returned

I am still looking for information on the spinning classes. Has anyone taken these? Or looked at the spinning bikes? I need to know what type of clipless pedals they have. I am planning on bringing my cycling shoes but need to know the type of cleat? I have a bike race days after we get back and I need to keep in condition on the cruise. I know that is going to be a hard thing to do with all that free food, but I have to try.

Less than 30 days It seems so close and yet so far

Sorry I have to be honest with you, I didn't see any spinning bikes there. I went to the gym only 4 days and I only used the eliptical trainers. I didn't ask about any group exercises though. I saw some of the normal exercise bikes but I never saw the spinning bikes.

I hope this isn't to late. I think I saw some spinning bikes in the gym. However, I don't know about classes or the type of petals. I can tell you the equipment is all the brand Life Fitness. I hope that helps. Here is a picture I took of the gym.

I have never cruised as a single before. I do know the funtimes will have single met and greets listed in it. Also once you get on board go to the dining room and check with the Maitre D (sp?) to see if you are at a table with other singles. You could met some good people to hang with at dinner. I sent you a PM so check your in box.

Hi Carolyn,
I have had some trouble getting the Private messages to work since the website was changed to a new format. So please let me know if it didn't get the private message (PM). How you get to your private messages is to click the User CP link you should see it at the top of this page. Once you click in and scroll down you will see private messages then click list messages. I hope that helps.:-D

Hate to disappoint anyone, but on my 11 April sailing at least the singles thing was next to nothing.
I did attend a single meet and greet and I was the only one to show up.
Cruising is all about couples & families I suppose .

I have never cruised single. But I think you table mates at the main dining room make a huge difference. If you meet other singles and hit if off that would work out well. Or even making a married couple that you get along with. We had a single at our table and she was a blast. We did are own things in port, but at night we hung together. She reminded both my hubby and me of my crazysis. I think a big key to a single is to be out going and friendly. That's 2 cents from someone with no clue.

oh yeah, there were some single people on-board. They just didn't attend the meet & greet.
Could be there were some single ladies who came up and saw one guy ( me ) who is bald and burly and discreetly went hid.

Your intuitions are correct. Being solo means table-mates make a huge difference. The ships do attempt to seat singles/ solos together. One trip may be all women plus me, and in April there were 6 of us gents at our table. Also you are most correct that for me the secret to a great trip is for me to take the initiative by being overly gregaroius....sing karaoke, dance, greet everyone, play every game possible, volunteer for audience participation, introduce oneself to the social host, ask the waiter about life back home...and so on. On ship of 3000 + guest, a solo cannot be a wallflower.

if a single person hit it off with us.. we'd enjoy their company.. not saying we'd do everything together.. as my partner and I need some alone time of course.. but for the most part.. if you're traveling alone or with just your mate.. I would think most people would welcome the extra company as long as everyone got along.

Hello again fellow Cruisemates!

Just had to stop by and shout out again. We just booked another round on the Splendor - this time I'm taking my mom and sisters (its my mom's birthday during the cruise!) One thing I love about Carnival are the prices. $389 for a 7 day cruise! Pretty hard to beat.

Anyway - Katlady, if you want to update your list, we're cruising on Jan 9.

Oh! And for those of you that wished me good luck on the CA State Bar - it worked. I passed! Happy to meet anyone on the lido deck for a celebratory drink of the day too!

Andy
