Default Question on San Juan

We will be in San Juan next week aboard the Liberty. We are scheduled to be in port from 7AM to 3:30PM. All the excursions listed under the Liberty list mention evening hours. Are we safe in doing a walking shore tour ourselves? I wouldn't want to walk to far from the piers at night but I think we would be safe during the day. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You are definitely safe to do a walking tour by yourself. We have done a guided one and one by ourselves and actually prefered doing it on our own. There is so much to see in old san juan where the cruise ships dock. Lots of cool restaurants, shopping and neat things to see and by your self you won't be rushed, able to spend more time at the things you like and skip the things your not interested in. Also there is a bus system that goes to all the main tourist points, in case you wanted to check out the fort or something.

Instead of taking a taxi or bus to visit the fort, El Morro (overlooking the entrance to San Juan Bay), we walked to the fort from the ship and back. It felt good to get off the ship and stretch our legs. When we returned to the dock area, we walked around the stores and felt completely safe. Our ship was only scheduled to be docked in the evening but we had to stay in port an additional day so repairs could be made to the ship. This delay precipitated cancelling our stop in St. Maarten but we enjoyed spending the day in San Juan.

We will be on the Liberty in a month, and look forward to seeing San Juan, again. I have never felt unsafe in this port, but being prudent, is always the best precaution.

We have walked around, taken a wonderful city tour, explored the fort, and shopped, we have done it all. You will have a great visit. The locals are friendly, and, helpful. The streets are cobblestoned, so keep that in mind, as walking is a bit unstable due to that...I can't wait!

Trip, with her book & tea!

The last time we were there, we were not docked near the fort. We took a cab up the hill (San Juan is very hilly) to the old cathedral, then walked back to the ship. Very pleasant, and we poked into various shops along the way and chatted with people. Felt very safe and there weren't a lot of our fellow pax around, so it was leisurely and very relaxing.

San Juan gets my vote as favorite Caribbean port. The history and cultural ambiance are tops. Tours to the El Yunque rain forest are easy enough.

Last time I was there on the Liberty, 2006, it was an evening arrival with a departure around midnight. So, everything we did there was at night and we didn't venture too far from the ship but didn't feel insecure.
