They also charge you for printing. Really no need to print - check in online and then print the pass when you get to the airport.
Southwest has a "deal" where for $10 you check in up to 3 days before your flight and they will assign passes on a first come first served basis before the regular cattle tries to get the A passes.
why would anyone want to pay the add'l $10 to get a seat - it doesn't matter where you sit on SW - as soon as that bird lands the person in the very back row is already up and ready to do the 100 yd dash in 2 seconds
I like to travel on SW but I wish the other travelers would learn some manners - depart the plane from the front not the back! (I've always wanted to say that!)
I gather a number of people, particularly on sold out planes at holiday times.
I tried it once recently and it works great. I didn't try right at the 3 day start and was A25, so apparently some other people liked the idea.
If I have time to waste (and money on cruise ships), and want to sit there trying to get the first boarding pass possible for commoners, no big deal, but sometimes, I think $10 is a bargain.
FYI - A1-15 are reserved for the full fare folks, after that are the A-pass FF with Southwest. Now the $10 crew comes and then the regular cattle.

I always fly with airlines which give you a seat when you checkin so for me it's never a problem but if all airlines should start with free seating, I should pay to be among the first in the line. (On some airlines, for example Ryanair, they sell so many "first in line" tickets so they really aren't worth that much but if you don't buy it you will be the last in line!)
It does matter where you sit. Some people want a window seat, some people want to sit in the back of the plane, some people want to sit in front of the engines etc.
