Default SKYPE on the Splendor ???

Will be on the Splendor Nov. 29th...
I have a daughter in Japan & want to be able to talk & see her through Skype...
Will be bringing my small laptop (mini) that has WiFi & a camera...
Has anyone used WiFi on the Splendor or other ships with Carnival?

The connections speeds are not the standard "broadband" quality that you will get at home: I.E. 240 Kbps upload and 1.2 Mbps - 10Mbps download.

A good speed is 200 Kbps download and 56-120 Kbps upload.

This will not give you a decent Skype connection. I suggest email instead.

Take care,
Mike

Found this on Carnival's site...
An initial one-time Activation Fee of $3.95 applies to each user.
A basic time charge of $0.75 per minute (“Pay-As-You-Go”) is available. Minutes are rounded to the next full minute.

Discounted "Time Plans" offer guests the opportunity to enjoy a lower per-minute rate. These Time Plans do not have to be used in a single session and can be used anytime throughout the cruise until debarkation; No refund for unused minutes; Upgrading selected pricing option is not available. Plans are subject to change.

Cruises 6 days in length and longer:

* 100 minutes for $55.00 ($0.55 per minute)
* 250 minutes for $100.00 ($0.40 per minute)

Cruises less than 6 days in length:

* 30 minutes for $16.50 ($0.55 per minute)
* 60 minutes for $24.00 ($0.40 per minute)

If your personal laptop does not have built in Wi-Fi, you can rent a Wirless Radio Card on board. To rent a Wireless Radio Card for your personal laptop, the rate is $10.00 per day, optional insurance is $3.00 per day. This allows guests to connect their laptops to the ship's wireless signal and is in addition to the Internet price plans.

A limited number of laptops are available for rent for an additional $10.00 per day, or free with a Time Plan purchase; and optional insurance is also available.

I had a pretty decent wi-fi connection on Splendor, but as Mike M said it may not be enough for Skype. Maybe if you dropped to voice only you wouldn't be too bad off. Not sure when peak times are but remember you are sharing the pipe with 3000 other folks it is is not too wide. Since your daughter is in Japan you might be able to find an off hours niche.

I don't really remember seeing internet cafes in port like in the Caribbean but I'm sure they are there. That might be another alternative.

looked up on Verizon & its 99 cents to roam in the ports...
I may have it turned on for Emergency conditions since my daughter is due in Dec....
I will go ahead & use the WiFi in my Asus mini laptop to email a couple times each day...
Thanks,

thanks for the info, I also considered using skype on my next cruise as my son and I have identical Acer netbooks with the built-in wifi and webcam in the lid. I think the connectivbity charges are too high and at that cost, I really don't "need" to see him face to face.

I decided I'll just type up my email content offline, in Notepad, and get a couple of the day's photos attached to it, then connect to the internet just long enough to copy and paste the email, attach a photo or to, and send it, then log off. I will also post a quick cruise report here during my cruise. I will upload a few photos to the Gallery and insert links to them.

Back last week from a fab cruise in the Legend. We managed to Skype with our daughter (without camera) with no problems on my 50th birthday which was lovely.
